Settlement in NC and the French and Indian War NC in the 1700’s

► North Carolina grew from a population of in 1720 to by 1750 ► By 1750, around 25% were slaves ► Most of the slaves were concentrated in the eastern part of the state where plantations were located

What do you notice about the settlement pattern of NC?

Great Wagon Road ► Trail that extended from PA to NC ► Brought settlers (mainly German and Scotch-Irish) to NC ► Traveled on land because of the lack of good ports in NC

What do you notice about settlement between the Coastal Plain and the Piedmont?

Africans in NC ► What did you notice about the settlement by Africans on the previous slide? ► Why do you think they settled only in this area?

The Wealthy East ► Coastal Plain region contained some plantations but not as many as other colonies ► Plantation owners controlled the government of NC

New Arrivals ► Settlers from the North arrived from the Great Wagon Road and settled in the Piedmont ► New ethnic groups (Scotch-Irish, German, Irish, etc) ► Yeoman farmers(small farms, few if any slaves, did all own work)

What crops do you think were grown on plantations?

► Slave population by colony- How does NC rank compared to others in the South? North?

What caused the slave population to increase?

European Powers in North America ► Where might there be conflicts?

War! ► Fact: France and Great Britain dislike each other and had fought many times ► Now the dispute has carried over to North America

French and Indian War ► Known as Seven Years War in Europe ► Lasted from ► First war to involve American colonists

French and Indian War Causes ► Colonists were running out of land ► Both France and England claim land in the Ohio Valley ► Native Americans and French are upset that colonists are moving onto their land

French and Indian War ► France and some Native American tribes VS. Great Britain, American colonists, and some Native American tribes

Recognize this person? ► This person was one of the colonists that helped the British defeat the French

Fort Dobbs ► Fort built to protect NC’s western settlers from Native American attacks

Fort Dobbs reenactors

Effects of the War 1. Britain defeats France 2. Britain wins control of North America east of the Mississippi River 3. Native Americans revolt against British 4. Spain gains control of New Orleans and French territory west of the Mississippi 5. Britain bans further settlement west of the Appalachian Mtns

Biggest Effect of the War ► British want colonists to help pay for war since the war was fought to protect them ► Colonists get angry about all of the taxes ► Plants seeds for the American Revolution
