Chapter 10 Drugs

Journal For this entry tell me why you think drugs are bad for teens. How does drug use negatively affect society? How does drug use positively affect society? Should be two paragraphs.

Drug Is a substance other than food that changes the structure or function of the body. All drugs have an effect on the body.

Essential Question How does drug use affect each part of the health triangle?

Drugs as Medicine Medicines are drugs that prevent or cure illnesses or treat their symptoms. Over-the-Counter (OTC)-can be found on the shelves of local pharmacy or grocery stores. Prescription drugs can only be obtained with doctor’s permission.

Drug Misuse/Drug Abuse Drug Misuse-is taking or using medicine in a way that it is not intended. Drug Abuse-is intentionally using drugs in a way that is unhealthful or illegal. When people take illegal drugs it is drug abuse.

Risk to Physical Health Drugs are especially dangerous to teens because their bodies are still growing. Drugs cause the brain and nervous systems to not work properly. Can make you feel nauseated or confused. Can cause a person to lose control of their ability to talk or walk. Can cause memory loss, seizures, coma, or even death.

Risk to Mental/Emotional Health Weakens your ability to think and learn. Cause low self-esteem, and problems relating to others. Can cause depression and anxiety.

Risk to Social Health Can cause you to lose friends due to mood swings, change in personality, and violence due to the use of drugs.

Overdose Is the taking more of a drug than the body can tolerate.

Types of Drugs Stimulants Depressants Club drugs Narcotics Hallucinogens

Stimulants A drug that speeds up the body functions. Examples: Amphetamines (Speed) Crack cocaine

Depressant Drugs that slow down the body’s functions and reactions, including heart rate. Most come in capsule form and are legal if prescribed by a doctor. Examples: Alcohol Barbiturtes

Marijuana Pot, weed, cannabis. Usually smoked Can act as a depressant on some and a stimulant on others. Over a long period of time it can cause the same problems as tobacco use.

Club Drugs Illegal drugs that are found mostly in nightclubs or at all- night. Often make people feel more relaxed. Examples: Ecstasy (X) Rohypnol (Date Rape Drug) Ketamine (Special K)

Narcotics Drugs that get rid of pin and dull the senses. Usually very addictive. Examples: Morphine Codeine Herion

Hallucinogens Drugs that distort moods, thoughts, and senses. May create imaginary images in the user’s mind. Example PCP LSD

Inhalants The vapors of chemicals that are sniffed or inhaled to get a “high” Can cause nausea, dizziness, mental confusion, and loss of motor skills. When inhaled poisons go straight to the brain.

Why Teens Use Drugs? Peer Pressure Use in Media Want to look cool Family does it

Males are negatively affected Height Weight Male hormone levels Testicle size and function Muscle mass development The age at which voice gets lower Age at which body and facial hair increases
