2 Medicines Medicines- Drugs that are used to treat or prevent disease or other condition Drugs- substances other than food that change the structure or function of the body or mind All medicines are drugs, but not all drugs are medicines

3 Medicine categories Help prevent disease
Fight pathogens, or infectious agents that cause disease Antivirals and antifungals Relieve pain Analgesics Help maintain or restore health and regulate the body’s systems Allergy medicine, body regulating (insulin, etc), antidepressant and antipsychotic medications, cancer treatments

4 Side effects Side effects- reactions to medicine other than the one intended Additive interaction- when medicines work together in a positive way Synergystic effect- interaction of 2 or more medicines results in a greater effect than when taken alone Antagonistic effect- when the effect of one medicine is canceled or reduced when taken with another medicine

5 Substance abuse Substance abuse is any unnecessary or improper use of chemical substances for nonmedical purposes Illicit drug use- the use or sale of any substance that is illegal or otherwise not permitted Physical consequences (overdose Mental/emotional consequences Social consequences

6 Addiction cycle Tolerance- the body needs more and more for the same effect Psychological dependence- person believes that a drug is needed in order to feel good or to function normally Physiological dependence- condition in which the user has a chemical need Addiction- physiological or psychological dependence

Raises dopamine…pleasurable feeling Individual who uses is 17 times more likely to use cocaine Contains MORE cancer causing chemical than tobacco Related to infertility

8 Inhalants Substances whose fumes are sniffed and inhaled to achieve a mind-altering effect Goes immediately to the brain Extremely dangerous
