Guyton Elementary Media Newsletter November 2015 Lights! Camera! Read! Book Week Celebration! November 16-20, 2015 We are looking forward to a star studded week celebrating the importance of reading and the love of great books. Read on to learn how you can participate at home.. November Children’s Book Week Wednesday, November 18: - Character in a Can contest entries due (voluntary) Friday, November 20 th : -Wear “formal” clothes and costume jewelry to school for GATOR Book Awards Assembly December 14 - Deadline for first semester reading challenge December -17 Reading Challenge Dance Party **Students must complete level 3 to attend Important Dates Dates Send us your “SHELFIES”!!!!!! What is a shelfie? A shelfie is a selfie you take of your family in front of your bookshelf or reading area at home holding your favorite book(s). We will be featuring all the pictures we receive in slide shows to be shown during lunch and will use them to decorate our lunchroom during November. Please your pics to "Fill your house with stacks of books, in all the crannies and all the nooks." — Dr. Seuss For a complete list of daily Book Week Activities, access our

This is a voluntary activity to be completed at home The purpose of this activity is to showcase love for favorite book characters in a creative and fun way Procedure: Choose a favorite book character Use an empty Pringles can (or similar can WITH a lid). Decorate the can to resemble the character you chose. Be as creative as you’d like when designing your can. Feel free to use yarn, sequins, felt, wiggle eyes, original drawings, etc. as you create your character. Please include an index card inside the can with the following information written legibly or typed: Student’s first AND last name Student’s teacher Name of the book character and title and author of the book or book series the character represents. Write an age appropriate paragraph describing why this is your favorite book character and why you would recommend the book(s) about this character to other readers. Although the ideas for the book character and designing the can need to come from the student, families are welcome to participate and assist the student as needed to complete the project…It is our hope in doing so that families will have fun bonding together and take advantage of the opportunity to discuss the importance of books and reading. Entries will be judged and winners announced during Friday’s GATOR Reading Awards Assembly All students who participate will receive a dress-down day pass and the winning students will receive a prize and be featured on our website and future Gator News Network shows. Character In A Can Contest Entries Due Wednesday, November 18th Attire: Attire: Formal All students are encouraged to come to school dress like a Hollywood Super Star (along the lines of old Hollywood glamour….long dresses, sequins, boas, suits and ties, dress shoes, costume jewelry. Students will be chauffeured from the bus ramp to the front of the school where they will walk the red carpet to their seats in the lunchroom. Along the way, they will be greeted by paparazzi taking their pictures and adoring fans asking for their autographs. As students arrive in the lunchroom, they may join in singing and dancing to the pre-show music.
