Conduct of the Examinations Rule #3: “No form of refreshment may be taken into the examination room. (At the discretion of the Diploma Programme coordinator, drinking water is permitted.)” Rule #16: “No candidate is permitted to borrow anything from another candidate during the examination.”

What will be provided to you… Graph paper Answer booklets with lined paper Calculator Ruler Data & formula books (Math, Chemistry & Physics)

What will be provided to you…

You may sit… In the seat assigned by the Invigilator (IB-speak for exam proctor). Rule 6: “The coordinator/invigilator will decide where each candidate will sit during an examination. Candidates must comply with the decision of the coordinator/invigilator and remain seated until permission is given to leave the examination room.”

For which exams are calculators permitted? Math HL Paper 2, Paper 3 Math SL Paper 2 Math Studies SL Paper 1, Paper 2 Biology HL & SL Paper 2, Paper 3 Chemistry HL & SL Paper 2, Paper 3 Physics HL & SL Paper 2, Paper 3

Calculators will be provided by… Calculators will be provided by the Invigilator (which will NOT be Mr. Halo’s personal calculator).

An exam begins at 8:00am… What do you do if you are 10 minutes late (or 20 minutes late or totally miss the exam)? (a) Call home. (b) Get an admit slip from the Main office. (c) Arrange to take the exam in the November test session, ONLY if there is an adverse circumstance causing the tardiness or absence.

Answer… Arrange to take the exam in the November testing session, ONLY if there is an adverse circumstance causing the tardiness or absence. OTHERWISE, you will owe $48 for missing the exam, to reimburse the district for what the district paid toward your exam. Rule 9: “Candidates must arrive in time for the start of an examination. Late arrivals may not be permitted.”

You need to leave the room temporarily during the exam… What MAY the Invigilator do? (a) Send someone to supervise you while you are out. (b) Send you back to your seat.

Conduct of Examination Rule 10: “In cases of emergency, at the discretion of the coordinator/invigilator, a candidate may be allowed to leave the examination room and return. The temporary absence of a candidate will be recorded by the coordinator/invigilator.” Rule 11: “A candidate will be supervised during a temporary absence from the examination room. There must be no communication with any person other than the person who is supervising the candidate.”

An exam begins at 8:00am and ends at 9:30am… You finish the exam at 8:45. What do you do next? (a) Wait until 9:00, then ask the Invigilator for permission to leave. (b) Leave immediately and quietly. (c) Leave as soon as you get the Invigilator’s attention. (d) Wait until 9:00, then leave.

Answer… (a) Wait until 9:00, then ask the Invigilator for permission to leave. Raise your hand when you are finished with your exam (like EOCs). I will come by and check that you have filled out your coversheet and have put the coversheet and pages together. I will collect all of your work. Then you may leave.

Conduct of Examination Rule #18: “Candidates will not be allowed to leave the examination room during the first hour or during the last 15 minutes of any examination. If the duration of the examination is one hour and 15 minutes or less, candidates will not be allowed to leave during the examination.” Rule #20: “It is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure that the front page of their coversheet is correctly completed prior to departure from the examination room.” See also Rule #21.

An exam begins at 8:00am and ends at 9:30am… You finish the exam at 9:20. What do you do next? (a) Wait until the exam is finished and the Invigilator gives permission to leave. (b) Leave immediately and quietly. (c) Leave as soon as you get the Invigilator’s attention. (d) Start talking to your neighbor, who is also finished.

Answer… (a) Wait until the exam is finished and the Invigilator gives permission to leave. Rule 18: “Candidates will not be allowed to leave the examination room… during the last 15 minutes of any examination.”

HL and SL are testing together for the same subject… The SL exam finishes at 9:45am. The HL exam finishes at 10:00am. You are taking the SL exam, use all time available to you and finish the exam at 9:45am.

What do you do next… Raise your hand, turn in your testing materials and wait quietly until the HL exam is over & the Invigilator dismisses everyone. Rule 18: “Candidates will not be allowed to leave the examination room… during the last 15 minutes of any examination.” The HL exam has 15 minutes to go, so if you are still in the testing room at 9:45, you stay until the HL exam is finished.

Guthrie Classes If you have a Guthrie Center class during your exam, do NOT go to the Guthrie Center. Come to your IB exam. Missing your exam because you went to your Guthrie Center class does NOT constitute an “adverse circumstance”. You will NOT be allowed to make up the exam. Rule 9: “Candidates must arrive in time for the start of an examination. Late arrivals may not be permitted.”

Malpractice… Which of the following may be considered malpractice? (a) Communicating with another candidate during the exam. (b) Copying another candidate’s work. (c) Impersonating another candidate. (d) Bringing unauthorized material into the examination room. (e) All of the above. See Conduct of the Examination #13, #14, #15, #16

Malpractice ELECTRONICS… Cell phones MUST be (a) off or silenced (b) stowed in your backpack or given to the exam proctor until the end of the exam (NOT until you finish your exam) Apple watches and calculator watches MUST be (a) left at home (b) stowed in your backpack or given to the exam proctor until the end of the exam (NOT until you finish your exam)

Pre-printed materials… Cover sheets and multiple choice answer sheets have… Your name Candidate session number and school code Subject, level and which paper (exam) YOU have to add… Which question(s) you answered How many answer booklets you have attached

Pre-printed Cover Sheet

The Cover Sheet… YOU, the Candidate, are responsible for making sure the cover sheet is filled out correctly. Rule 20: “It is the responsibility of the candidate to ensure that the front page of their coversheet is correctly completed prior to departure from the examination room.”

Using answer booklets… Two types: subject specific and blank for writing essays. Many of the exams are now sent to a scanning center which are then electronically sent to the examiners. It is very important that your answers are within the box drawn in the answer booklets so that your entire answer is scanned and graded. Only ONE line of writing on each line in the booklet.

Using answer booklets… Where answer boxes are provided, candidates must write their answers in the boxes. If candidates are unable to complete their answer in the box given, they should continue their answer on supplementary answer booklets and indicate that they have done this within the box. For exams using blank answer booklets, all draft work is done in the answer booklet. If a candidate does not want this draft work to be marked, a line must be drawn through that work.

Using answer booklets… When you start a new question or essay, skip a minimum of one line and go to the next line that has the two boxes for writing the question number. Start the new question or essay on that line.

In which rooms will exams be held? Many of the exams will be in Rooms A421-A426. A few exams will be in the gym or in Room A428. Remember some of the rooms can get very cold. Dress in layers, bring a sweater or sweatshirt.
