Unit 305: Develop professional relationships with adults...

Team work! One man alone can be pretty dumb sometimes, but for real bona fide stupidity, there ain't nothin' can beat teamwork. Edward Abbey I love teamwork. I love the idea of everyone rallying together to help me win. Michael Schumacher It's as simple as this. When people don't unload their opinions and feel like they've been listened to, they won't really get on board. If you want creative workers, give them enough time to play. John Cleese You've achieved success in your field when you don't know whether what you're doing is work or play. Swahili proverb

Q. How many people does it take to build a Jumbo Jet? A. Around 500,000 man-hours = 8,000 people in 75 days

Game... Individually, can you draw a map of the world in 3 minutes? Now, as a team, can you re-draw the map as accurately as possible. You need to mark on the positions of these features: River Nile, Mount Everest, Moscow, Peru, Ayres Rock, Chicago, Syria, the Baltic Sea, the best place I’ve been to!

What does team work mean? “A joint action by a group of people, in which each person subordinates his or her individual interests and opinions to the unity and efficiency of the group."

What makes a great team?

What factors make for a great team? An understanding of each others’ roles and responsibilities. Respect for each others’ strengths and weaknesses. Willingness to use objective criteria for analysing class issues or pupils difficulties. An understanding of how personal issues can affect the role of a group member. Opportunities to express positive comments on what’s gone well. Setting problematic feedback about pupils in a positive working framework.

Sensitivity and understanding Willingness to try others’ ideas Equal sharing of work load ‘professionalism’

What factors reinforce the values of TAs? Active systems for providing and accessing information Opportunities for time to talk... An ethos of collaboration A recognition of the part that TAs play in supporting learning. Communication systems that encourage understanding of pupils’ needs.

What makes a team challenging to work with?

factionalism Perception that others aren’t working as me Perception that others are being listened to more than me Poorly communicated direction by team leader Unconvincing change

Recognising negative group behaviour Blocking Aggression Dominating Withdrawing Out of field behavior

Aspects of Group Process: Communication Who talks to whom? Who interrupts and how is it handled? How are quiet members treated? High and low participators? Shifts in participation levels? Do people look at each other when they talk? How are new members treated?

What are the Four Stages of Team Development? Forming Storming Norming Performing Every effective team goes through these life cycle stages

Storming Members are sizing each other up and may feel more comfortable and voice their views Members may compete for team roles May argue about goals or how they should be accomplished May choose sides against other members

Norming Once issues are resolved, agreement occurs around team norms and expectations Trust and common interests are developing Roles and objectives are clarified and understood

Performing Members make contributions and are motivated by results Leadership is shared according to members’ knowledge and skills Norms and culture are well understood Tasks get accomplished effectively and efficiently

What about a Stage 5??? What about when a group dissolves or transforms into another team or group dynamic? We could call that Dissolving or Transforming…

“ while everyone is moving forward together, Success takes care of itself.” - unknown

Activity! What sort of job/ career do I want for myself?
