1 Leadership Skills

2 LEADERS As a leader, health care workers are called upon to influence the well being or safety of others. Since original perceptions can change through the course of time, selecting a leader is an important responsibility.

3 LEADERS A leader is a person who directs with authority and influence.
A leader is one who guides directs facilitates process empowers influences others to follow People often have higher expectations for a leader .

4 DESIRABLE QUALITIES OF LEADERS
A willingness to lead Acceptance by those that will be led The ability to identify and organize goals Good work ethics Dependability Self-confidence

5 LEADERSHIP & TEAMWORK Leadership can be defined as deliberately causing people-driven actions for the purpose of accomplishing the leader’s agenda. Quality healthcare is dependent on teamwork and leadership

6 TEAM MEETINGS As a healthcare worker, you are part of a team.
You will have to attend meetings as well as conduct meetings. When conducting meetings: Set the agenda by defining goals and desired outcomes Keep the meeting on task Brainstorm ideas Resolve differences by consensus Assign follow-up tasks and items Evaluate the session and end on time

7 BRAINSTORM TO GENERATE IDEAS
When brainstorming: Define the problem Set the ground rules Treat participants with respect All ideas have value No debate or discussion of ideas Document ideas

8 GROUPS REACH CONSENSUS
Consensus is a decision in which everyone participates in creating and everyone can live with and support. Develop criteria for the decision Find areas of common agreement (what do we all agree on) Develop a consensus decision Ask for a show of consensus (a vote)

9 CONFLICT IS “OK” IF MANAGED
Conflict is essential to critical thinking because members must feel the freedom to differ Manage constructively Use ground rules (ex. – no interruptions while talking) Acknowledge differences as they occur Look for common ground and identify alternatives Resolve quickly by consensus

10 ROLES OF TEAM MEMBERS Determined by personalities, qualities, & values
Some of the qualities of team members include: Trust Sensitivity Belief in consensus Pride in the organization Value of individual differences Appreciation of diversity Promptness Organization Enthusiasm Critical Thinking

11 Class Assignment You will be divided into 4-5 groups.
Using the supplies provided, your group should create an elementary age board game related to hand-washing Draw out your board game, create the rules for play, game pieces, etc.. There is a 20 minute time limit to complete the task. No additional time will be given. At the end of 20 minutes, you will present your game to the class. Ready, Set, GO……

12 Examples of types of leaders and team members….
Which type of team member are you??? Which type of leader are you??

13 INITIATOR One who gets the group started.
Example - “OK… so who wants to take notes?, who wants to make the poster, etc…”

14 INTREPRETER One who clarifies or explains other team members ideas.
Example - “I think what she is trying to say is…..”

15 ANALYSER One who gives critical analysis of the ideas.
Example - “What happens if we do it this way instead of that way?”

16 HARMONIZER One who tries to reduce tension and reduce differences among group members. Example - “You both have good ideas…”

17 ENCOURAGER One who has a friendly attitude toward members and encourage acceptance of members ideas. Example - “I like that, that’s a good idea”

18 BLOCKER Always opposing ideas of group members.
Example - “That’s not a good idea or they will never go along with it”

19 DOMINEERING One who tries to manipulate the group.
They often have their own hidden agenda

20 CLOWN One who is always making jokes, has a great time but does not always add to the productivity of the group.

21 ASSERTIVE One who keeps the group on task - keeps things rolling smoothly, and watches the clock. Example - “We only have 15 minutes left, what can we finish?”

22 AGGRESSIVE One who verbally attacks others.
Example - “What are you thinking??? That is a dumb idea”
