1 Teamwork Workshop (Workshop 3) Date: 4 July 2011 Office of Service-Learning, Lingnan University

2 Activity Time!  Warm up game: ‘Trust Fall’  All people will walk around the room randomly  Anyone who clap hands  Fall  The others need to support him/her immediately

3  A joint action by a group of people, in which each person subordinates his or her individual interests and opinions to the unity and efficiency of the group  Members collaborate together and use their talent and experience to contribute to the success of the team's objectives Webster's New World Dictionary What is teamwork?

4  Teams do not become effective overnight. Team building is a process that requires due attention and care  Members work interdependently and work towards both personal and team goals, and they understand these goals are accomplished best by mutual support What is teamwork?

5  Sit with your teammate  Choose a color to represent each of your teammates and yourself (3 Mins)  Discussion (15 Mins) Go around your group, one teammate at a time. Talk about which colors people chose for that teammate and why Do you understand your teammates?

7 Discussion Time! (10 Mins) Through observation of the individual members of your team:  Compare each person's strengths and weakness with tBelbin's descriptions of team roles  Note the role that most accurately describes each person.  Which team roles are missing from your team?  From this, ask yourself which strengths are likely to be missing from the team overall?

9 Honest Conversations! We can start to admit more of the truth to ourselves to confront more of our difficulties and to be honest about our feelings Activity Time

10  In paying attention to someone in a calm, accepting way, you teach that person to pay attention to themselves in just that way.  In caring for others, you teach them to care for themselves and you help them to feel more like caring about others.  The more you have faced and accepted your own feelings, the more you can be a supportive witness for another person who is struggling to face and accept his or her feelings.  In forgiving people for being human and making mistakes and having limits, you teach people to forgive themselves and start over, and you help them to have a more forgiving attitude toward others.  By having conversations that include the honest sharing and recognition of feelings, and the exploration of alternative possibilities of action, you help a person to see that, by gradual degrees, they can start to have more honest and fruitful conversations with the important people in their lives.
