Language arts is a block schedule. Students are with me for two periods; 80 minutes. The first half of class is dedicated to journaling, DOL, grammar mini lessons, and reading. The second half of class is dedicated to writing. Sometimes they may switch schedules and students need to be flexible.

All assignments must be turned in on time. For each day absent they will receive a day to make up work. It is their responsibility to consult with me for missed work and make-up tests or quizzes. Students who miss an assignment will call home and will be required to serve a lunch detention or/an after-school detention.

Students will read novels in the classroom and stories from our textbook. The first story we will be reading from our textbook is “Eleven” and our first novel is “Freak the Mighty.” We will also be using the new Writing Coach textbook.

The Accelerated Reader (AR) program is used at I.T. Students read fiction and nonfiction texts selected from a list and then take short computer quizzes to test comprehension. Students earn points based on the difficulty of the book and their performance on the quiz. The Accelerated Reader (AR) program is used at I.T. In addition to responding to reading though writing, students will be writing a narrative and argumentative essays. They will also do daily journaling to strengthen their writing. There are several steps in the writing process and students are expected to keep all of their writing samples in their portfolios so that they can see their growth as writers. We will be using the Writing Coach textbook.
