Prokaryotic Cells – NO Organelles

BACTERIAL CELL

Organelles  Cells all have certain functions  Organelles help the cell carry out it’s specific role  Organelles - separate parts of the cell that carry out essential cell processes. Each organelle has a unique structure and function.  Organelles in the notes are highlighted in RED

Cellular Structure and Function 7.3 Structures and Organelles Chapter 7 ANIMAL CELL

Structure and Organelles – Animal Cells Only!  Centrioles – occur in pairs and aide in cell division  Lysosome – contains digestive enzymes that breakdown excess or worn-out cellular substances

Cellular Structure and Function 7.3 Structures and Organelles Chapter 7 PLANT CELL

Structure and Organelles – Only Plant Cells!  Cell Wall – non-flexible barrier that provides support and protects the plant cell  Chloroplast – contains chlorophyll where photosynthesis takes place  Vacuole – vesicle for temporary storage of water and food

Support Structures  Cytoplasm – fluid material inside the cell in which all organelles are located  Cytoskeleton – framework for the cell within the cytoplasm

Nucleus  Contains coded instructions for the production of proteins and cell division  Nucleolus - The round structure within the nucleus of a cell composed of protein and RNA  Nuclear Membrane (envelope) - The double- layered membrane surrounding the nucleus of a eukaryotic cell, separating the nucleus from the cytoplasm

Endoplasmic Reticulum and Ribosomes  Endoplasmic Reticulum – site of protein and lipid synthesis  Ribosomes – produce proteins  Smooth ER – contains NO ribosomes  Rough ER – contains ribosomes

Mitochondria  Produces energy for the rest of the cell

Golgi Apparatus  Modifies proteins and packages them for shipment out of the cell  Think of it like UPS or the postal service

Cilia  Short, numerous projections that look like hairs Cellular Structure and Function Flagella  Longer and less numerous than cilia  Create movement with a whiplike motion 400x 26,367x 7.3 Structures and Organelles - MOVEMENT Chapter 7

 Complete the chart using your textbook and the purple cell book on my bookshelf Use page 199 of your book!  DO NOT complete the channel, receptor and marker section of the chart today! We will do this later this week  Be sure your work is of quality. This is worth some major points!
