Natural Resources Management (NRM) Introduction Natural resource management is the combination of three different words or aspects i.e. natural, resource and management. However, in our purposes we use the term NRM as here to manage, foresee, organize, command, and coordinate to achieve the desires goals through the proper acquisition, mobilization, and operation of natural resources...

Objectives The national objectives of the tenth plan are as follows Sustainable development of forest and watershed sector, To grow the economy, and raise standard of living through the increment in income and employment, By ensuring people's participation, Contribution to be made employment generation, and human development, Finally, poverty alleviation.

Sectoral Objectives To support poverty alleviation by creating employment opportunities for the poor, women and backward section through the participatory development programs. Reduce poverty by increasing production, productivity and income in the agricultural sector and contribute to food and nutrition, If so what would be an appropriate strategy of getting these desired objectives?

Strategies Sustainable management of the valuable non- timber forest products, utilize and promote the people’s participation, Sustain agricultural development by developing agricultural technology and by protection, promotion and use of agro-diversity and environment,

Training To develop non-timber forest products and plant resources by the proper use of the NGOs and communities. PAPWT launched a training program for Ex- Kamaiyas in Kailali district on Non-Timber Forest Products (NTFPs) and Aromatic Plants (MAPs).

Statement of the problems Lower source of income among the freed Kamaiyas Unware of commercially viable value of NTFPs. No introduction of this commercially viable sector in freed Kamaiyas areas. No more extension and publicity of established technical aspects, Minimum attention and investment on this sector.

Objectives The main desired objectives are, After the completion of the training freed kamaiyas will get more knowledge, It will improve them management skill and knowledge, They will be aware of its benefits and to involve in their cultivation, It will helpful for them in generating extra income for the improvement of their livelihood.

Specific objectives Motivate the freed Kamaiyas in NTFP cultivation, Give the introduction, importance and present status of NTFPs in Kailali districts, Know the habitat and utility of commercially viable of these products, Give knowledge on NTFPs plantation techniques, Give an ideas about diseases/ pests of NTFPs plantation sites and their control measures, Make participants capable on plantation, site selection and its preparation, protection and management, Give ideas about market, marketing, market channels and market information and systems of trade. Holding group meeting

Target Groups Freed Kamaiyas of selected sibir (Camps). Out of them 30 % beneficiaries were from women headed HH of the selected sibirs of Tharu communities and Other disadvantaged groups.

Methodology Participatory and action research oriented. The NTFPs species were Kurilo and Pipla. Training emphasis was given on introduction, potentiality of NTFP on income generation, its overall management, market mechanism and trade.

Expected outcomes The beneficiaries obtained at least NRs 10,000/- per katha annually unless unavoidable conditions prevail, Each Kamaiyas managed at least 1 species of NTFP available in their home district.

Follow up Action plan for next phase shall be prepared after the impact assessment of the training, Focus areas for AP would be –NTFP management –sustainable harvesting –market linkages –commercial viability –sharing of skill and experiences with nearby sibirs (camps) If the impact get significant the program will be replicated in other sibirs too.

Key Advantages Proper knowledge of NTFPs species. Commercial viability of their production through which raising their income. Developed self- sufficiency. People's participation in NRM. Acknowledgement about their utilities. Effective participation of women in the management of forest The plan will be formulated through the local level. Gender equity, empowerment and human resource development. Action oriented system will be developed in forest sector too etc.

Key challences The people are vulnerable so they will face their difficulties. Cultivation of these products took 2 to 3 years. Marketing for the products. Crop failures.

NTFP introduction It may be defined as forest products other than timber, fuel wood and fodder like Medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs), Bamboo, rattan, roots, fruits, resin etc. And other biological resources (other than timber, fuel wood, and fodder) like fauna, honey, fishes and microorganisms. Medicinal plants may be defined as plants whose any one or more parts are used for medicinal purposes for the curing of diseases, it is also known as Aurvedhic treatment. Aromatic plants are those plants whose parts used for making scents and other cosmetic goods. The forest of far western development region is richer in MAPs.
