Ajit Maru GFAR Secretariat FAO-EPSO Consultation on “Plant Sciences for Sustainable Crop Production” 25 June 2112

 What is GFAR ?  The GCARD process  GCARD 1 (2010)  GCARD 2 (2012)  Conference Structure  Expected Outcomes

The Global Forum on Agricultural Research is a multi stakeholder platform for dialogue on critical issues related to agricultural research for development, advocate and facilitate collaborative action through partnerships and assess impact of these actions.

 Advocacy for change  Transforming Institutions for the Future  Inter-regional collective action  Knowledge for All G8 Statement on Food Security 2009: “We support the fundamental reform processes underway in the global agricultural research system through the Global Forum on Agricultural Research“

Lack of political commitment resulting in huge gap in investment Inadequate attention to many contextual factors required for impact on agricultural productivity especially of small holder farmers Poor linkage between research processes and development agenda Lack of involvement of all relevant stakeholders Difficulty in defining national AR4D priorities and actions and lack of effective mechanisms to put these priorities into action

 Why hasn’t existing knowledge better benefited the poor?  Why have many apparently effective technologies not been adopted?  Why isn’t agricultural innovation better valued in development?  How can we build more collective action towards large scale development impacts?

 GCARD, merging CGIAR AGM & GCARD Triennial meeting  GCARD process: led and managed by GFAR in collaboration with the CGIAR Consortium  I nclusive: Active engagement with all stakeholders engaged in agricultural innovation  S hared responsibility for development outcomes

GCARD 1 2010 GCARD 2 2012 GCARD 3 2014 GCARD 2016 New cycle starts With a conference held every two years GCARD 2018 What needs to be transformed ? How to transform AR4D? Stock-Taking

1. Facilitate alignment of the research agenda with development needs of the resource-poor 2.Advocate for more effective investment for AR&D 3.Facilitate dialogue between diverse stakeholders on innovation pathways 4.Promote the integration of the international agricultural research systems with national systems.

 "We agree to strengthen agricultural research and innovation and support results based agricultural research for development through our national agricultural research systems, the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) and the Global Forum on Agricultural Research (GFAR). We welcome the “Montpellier road-map” coming from the first Global Conference on Agricultural Research for Development of 2010 (GCARD)" G20 Ministerial Declaration, 2011G20 Ministerial Declaration, 2011
