4 th Grade Parent Orientation Presented by: The 4 th Grade Team

Parent Involvement and Responsibility Your support is highly valued and appreciated! We encourage you to get involved in different organizations –VIPS –PTA –Watch D.O.G.S 4 th Grade=BIG responsibility year We will facilitate your child’s learning, but we will not pester them for work. We want them to take responsibility for their success.

School Hours- Drop Off Students should be in the gym for assembly at 7:35am. Students are tardy after 7:45 Students are served breakfast promptly at 7:45, as they must transitions to Fine Arts at 8:00. Tardy students may miss valuable information about the day.

School Hours- Pick Up Students will be in their magnet class from 3:00- 4:00 Parent Pick up- must stay in car and get in line for the circle drive pick up. Walk Home- students walk home or be picked up at Woodson Park or off Dixie. Changes to pick up must be made before 2:00pm by phone or in person.

Rotation Schedule Fine Arts-8:00-8:45 Rotation 1- 8:45-10:15 Rotation 2 (1 st half)- 10:15-11:15 Lunch-11:15-12:00 Rotation 2 (completion)- 12:00-12:30 Rotation 3- 12:30-2:00

Lunch Lunch is from: –11:15-11:50: Lujan and Goode –11:20-11:55: McNew and Nava After the first 3 weeks of school, you are welcome to eat with your child during their lunch time. Sign into the office before you make your way to the cafeteria.

CHAMPS/PBIS Positive Behavior Intervention Support No more discipline log Classroom teachers will reinforce positive behavior using Milam Moolah Students may use moolah to purchase different rewards (will be posted online).

CHAMPS/PBIS- Consequences Consequence book- signature and behavior Students are expected to sign the book if behavior is severe enough to distract learning. If behavior is consistent or severe, parents will be contacted. Planners will be still used as a form of communication. We encourage parents to communicate good behavior to us as well.

Planner and Take Home Folder Planner will be used to record daily tasks and homework and will be located in big binder. Parents are expected to check planner daily for any notes or special information. Students will receive a Take Home Folder with graded papers to redo every Tuesday. Parents are expected to review the grades and sign the folder. Students have till Friday of the same week to make up any grade below a 70.

Homework Students will place daily homework in their large binder in individual sheet protectors. Students will have homework every night: –Math: Monday-Thursday, 1-2 problems –Spelling: Monday- Thursday, 1-2 activities –Vocabulary: Monday- Wednesday 1-2 activities –Nightly A.R. Reading ( students will be assessed on if they achieve their weekly goal)- 20 minutes. Please take the time to review your child’s homework with them and emphasize the importance of completing their work.

Curriculum-Reading Highly emphasize vocabulary and figurative language and its use. Comprehension strategies across of text genres Comparing literary elements and text features between two texts. Workstations Nightly AR Reading

Curriculum-Science Scientific inquiry Earth and Space Science Circuits and Energy Science Fair –Required participation –Required research paper –Science Fair meeting at the end of September/Beginning of October Occasional Science homework integrated with Reading

Important Dates March 29 th and 30 th - STAAR Writing Test Day 1 and 2 May 9 th and 10 th - STAAR Reading and Math test Will use Benchmark Testing days to prep for these tests. Dated TBA.
