What is NHS? The National Honor Society (NHS) is the nation's premier organization established to recognize outstanding high school students. More than just an honor roll, NHS serves to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, service, and character. NHS began in 1921.
What does Byron Nelson’s NHS do? Dues are $15 a year (This covers the cost of a yearly T-shirt and your letter jacket NHS patch) NHS meets the third week of every month on Thursday before or afterschool in AC118(AP Research room.) Attendance at the monthly meeting is mandatory for membership. If you miss more than one meeting, your membership will be revoked. NHS members must complete 5 Campus Service Hours and 5 Community Service Hours each six weeks. NHS members participate in 1 to 2 National Honor Society Service Projects a semester. Participation in these are MANDATORY. If you fail to attend, you will be given an alternate individual option to earn service hours. NHS members must hold a 90 or above grade average.
Eligible for NHS? You must have attended this informational meeting and signed in. You must be a sophomore, junior, or senior You must have attended Byron Nelson for 1 full semester You must have a 90 or above grade average You may have no more than 2 ECO assignments within a semester, no more than 1 ISS assignment, no OSS or expulsion You must turn in the Information Packet and Signature sheet by the deadline
Application Process You will be given paper copies of the application and signature page today. Everything is due by 3:45PM on Monday, May 2, 2016 to Ms. Pryor in AC109 Late applications will not be accepted!!!

Teacher Recommendations: You MUST Write, type, or a nice note to 3 of your current teachers letting them know you are a candidate for National Honor Society and ask if they will fill out the Googledoc recommendation form (I have placed this form on moodle for you to print or ) Include your full name and ID number Follow up in a few days and thank them! This must be completed by the teachers by Monday, May 2, 2016
Acceptable Service Hours Service Activities are volunteer activities done for others, not including immediate family, for which no compensation has been given. Service Activities do NOT include activities that are required for an extra-curricular sport, organization, or class at BNHS. AcceptableNot Acceptable Volunteering to watch children for a church function Babysitting siblings for mom Volunteering to work at the Color Guard Competition if you are not a member of the BNHS Color guard team Working at a Dance Clinic that you are required to be at for being a member of the BNHS Drill Team
Scoring Process for NHS Membership Candidate NHS ComponentsPoints Awarded Scholarship: a.) Be a sophomore, junior, senior b.) Have a 90 out of 100 average c.) Be at BNHS for a full semester d.) Complete the Packet and Signature Page by the deadline 10 Service: List Campus or Community Volunteer Hours 30 Leadership: List Leadership Positions held at BNHS, community, or work, this includes involvement in co-curricular groups 25 Character: Teacher Recommendations, the score is an average from 3 teachers 30 Citizenship: Clear Discipline Record5
What if I don’t get in? You must score an 80 or above out of 100 points to become a member of NHS! If you complete the signature page and information packet on time, but do not meet the point requirement for NHS membership, you will be eligible to re-apply for membership next year! If you do not complete the signature page and information packet on time, you will NOT be eligible for NHS in the future. If you are offered membership and choose not to accept it, you will not be allowed to apply again next year.
DON’T FORGET! Information Packets, Signature Pages, and Teacher Recommendations need to be completed by Monday, May 2, 2016!!! Turn in Paperwork to Room AC 109!!!!
