Energy Resources
What are Natural Resources? Supplies from nature. Everything on or around the Earth that we use to survive. For example: Coal Oil Iron Timber Rivers Animals Sunlight
How do we classify natural resources? Renewable resources Nonrenewable resources Inexhaustible resources
Renewable Resources Things that can be replaced in a relatively short amount of time. We must be wise about how we use these items! We could overuse, pollute, or destroy them too fast for them to be replaced. Examples: plants, animals, water, air, soil
Nonrenewable Resources Cannot be replaced in a short amount of time. Made from dead plants and animals millions of years ago. Once we use them up, they are gone forever. We are using them faster than nature can replace them. Examples: fossil fuels (oils, natural gas, coal) and minerals
Inexhaustible Resources Those things that can be replaced as fast as they are used. No matter how much we use, we can never run out. Examples: sunlight, wind, and ocean tides.

WHAT is Biomass? p696 Is a Main source of Renewable Energy for more than half the world. Ex: wood, dried field crops and dried fecal materials from animals. One way to produce is to plant large numbers of rapidly growing plants that can be burned, converted to gas, or fermented for fuel. DISADVANTAGE: They release CO2 when burned.
DISCUSS- WHERE and WHY.. Different Energy is USED. QS: What kind of ENERGY IS USED… BY RIVERS? BY COASTLINES? IN DESERTS OR LOW LATITUDES? IN DOMESTIC COUNTRIES? P698 IN INDUSTRIALIZED COUNTRIES?
Radon is a toxic gas that may cause cancer..
Fission vs Fusion (sun) Fission- splitting of atomic nuclei. Lots of energy produced from a small mass Fusion- combining atomic H nuclei. Requires high temp, stars, SUN
Fission splits an atoms nucleus Definition: a nuclear reaction in which an atomic nucleus is split into two smaller parts producing energy.. CONTROLLED: – EX: Nuclear Power Plant UNCONTROLLED: –In reactor = meltdown! –Ex: Atomic bomb!
Fusion Definition: a nuclear reaction in which the nuclei of two atoms fuse or COMBINE to form a larger nucleus. This give off Energy.. Form of heat. Called a thermonuclear reaction – occurs only at very high temps lowest temperature required for fusion: 40,000,000 K EX: occurs constantly in SUN
DO YOU KNOW QS? Take notes. 1.Which of the naturally occurring elements is used in nuclear fission? 2.Why is nuclear fusion dangerous? 3.Which nuclear reaction does the sun produce?
ANSWERS 1. Uranium Cause dangerous radiation 3. Nuclear fusion
QS: What is the ULTIMATE source of Energy on Earth???
ANSWER The SUN!
