1 NONRENEWABLE AND RENEWABLE RESOURCES

2 NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES
A nonrenewable resource is a natural resource that cannot be re-made or re-grown at a rate comparable to its consumption.

3 Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy.
NUCLEAR ENERGY Nuclear fission uses uranium to create energy. Nuclear energy is a nonrenewable resource because once the uranium is used, it is gone!

4 COAL, OIL, AND GAS Coal, oil, and natural gas are considered nonrenewable because they can not be replenished in a short period of time. These are called fossil fuels.

5 Fossil Fuels Fossil fuels exist in a fixed amount, and take millions of years to be replenished.

6 RENEWABLE RESOURCES Renewable resources are natural resources that can be replenished in a short period of time. ● Solar ● Geothermal ● Wind ● Biomass ● Water

7 SOLAR Energy from the sun.
Solar energy is considered renewable, because it will be available for billions of years.

8 Energy from Earth’s heat.
GEOTHERMAL Energy from Earth’s heat. Geothermal energy is considered renewable, Because its source is the almost unlimited amount of heat generated by the Earth's core.

9 WIND Energy from the wind.
Wind turbines create power without using fossil fuels, without producing greenhouse gases or toxic waste.

10 BIOMASS Energy from burning organic or living matter. All living matter contains carbon Biomass is considered a renewable energy source because the carbon in biomass is regarded as part of the natural carbon cycle: trees take in carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and convert it into biomass and when they die, it is released back into the atmosphere.

11 WATER or HYDROELECTRIC
Energy from the flow of water. Water is considered a renewable resource because it can be used over and over again due to the water cycle
