1 Renewable, Nonrenewable, and Inexaustable energy resources

2 Energy Humans use energy everyday!
Some of this energy is better for the environment than others… We can place energy into 3 categories based on how the affect the environment…

3 1. NONRENEWABLE RESOURCES
cannot be replaced as quickly as it is used. Eventually, these resources will run out.

4 NONRENEWABLE ENERGY NUCLEAR ENERGY: Very dangerous source of energy. Created from splitting atoms of uranium. .

5 NONRENEWABLE ENERGY FOSSIL FUELS: energy from the remains of dead plants and animals from millions of years ago. 1. Coal: black rock burned in power plants, it pollutes air. 2. Petroleum (oil): Black liquid fossil fuel obtained from drilling into the earth. We use it for our cars. 3. Natural gas: Gas that it trapped underground. It burns the cleanest of all fossil fuels and for that reason we use it to heat our homes

6 Why are they non-renewable?

7 OIL & COAL IN THE OCEAN

8 WHITEBOARD QUESTIONS What form of energy comes from splitting atoms?
What form of energy is mined from under the ground? What form of energy warms our houses? What form of energy is drilled from the earth?

9 WHITEBOARD QUESTIONS What form of energy pollutes the air?
What fossil fuel is a solid? What fossil fuel is a liquid? What fossil fuel is gas?

10 2. RENEWABLE RESOURCES Resources that can be replaced in a short period of time.

11 Renewable Resources Examples
Biomass: trees and wood We can grow this energy source. 2. Geothermal Energy: energy from the Earth’s heat This energy source uses the heat located deep inside the earth.

12 Why are they renewable?

13 Inexhaustible Resources
Resources that will NEVER run out

14 INEXAUSTABLE EXAMPLES
1.Solar Power (sun) When it is cloudy or nighttime, this energy source doesn’t work very well. 2. Wind Power This source of energy uses the power of moving air. It is captured on large farms that some people think are ugly 3. Hydroelectric or Tidal Power (water) To get this source of power, we build large dams and use the power of moving water.

15 Why are they inexaustable?

16 Which resource is better for the environment?
Inexhaustible resources because they will never run out and do not produce any waste that can hurt the Earth. HOWEVER, they are expensive to use!

17 What kind of energy do the pictures represent?
Above: oil drilling; Right: Factory using coal

18 What kind of energy do the pictures represent?
Hydroelectric or Tidal Renewable

19 What kind of energy do the pictures represent?
Solar Petroleum/oil

20 What kind of energy do the pictures represent?
Wind Power

21 What kind of energy do the pictures represent?
Tidal
