OCR Nationals: Unit 1: ICT Skills for Business Introduction to the course and unit

Overview of the course OCR Nationals will help you to develop your personal skills in areas applicable to any workplace, such as team working, communication and problem solving. The course is a GCSE equivalent qualification made up by completing two units successfully, these must be: one 60 Hour Unit + one 30 Hour Unit 60 Hour Unit – ICT Skills for Business 30 Hour Unit – Creating Sound using ICT Assessment All units are centre-assessed and externally moderated. There are no timetabled exams for this qualification; the full award and units from this qualification are graded as Pass, Merit or Distinction.

Overview of the unit 1 Everyone has to complete Unit 1 in order to achieve a qualification In this unit of work you are going to create different ICT business documents for a company called ‘Downloadable Tunes’

Scenario You have been employed to assist with the expansion of a ‘downloadable tunes’ internet business and will complete a variety of ICT tasks to promote the business. The company website already includes numerous singles and albums which can be purchased online so that customers can download the tunes they require.

Scenario The company was previously run by one person from their home – it started as a hobby but has taken off. The website was created and customers have been accessing the site, ordering the tunes online and then after making a payment they are able to download the tracks in a format to suit them. The business owner has been recording all details by hand but it is becoming apparent that if the business is to survive it needs to: record business transactions in a spreadsheet record customer details in a database produce professional documentation that can be used to promote the business, including a newsletter. Finally you will produce an electronic slide presentation about the company.

Assessment Objectives The 6 assessment objectives for this unit are: AO1 – File Management AO2 – Using the internet and AO3 – Presentations AO4 – Business Documents AO5 – Spreadsheet AO6 - Database

Your Task To create a logo to advertise Downloadable Tunes and to be used on all the work you create for the company

Introduction to Logos What is a logo? An image that represents a company or its products What is it used for? Its function is to create a memorable, recognisable impression on the mind of a potential customer or client

Types of Logos Illustrative logos – a logo that clearly illustrates what the company does Graphic logos – a logo that includes a graphic, often an abstraction of what you company does Font-based logos – a text treatment which represents your company

What makes a good logo? Creates a positive powerful first impression Has a long lasting impression as well Should show the ethos, mission and product/services of what it is for Gives a polished professional look Reflects the nature of what it is for Should be simple Needs to work well both in colour and black and white
