CIVIL WAR /Virginia Divided Unit Presentation Floy S. Bunning

Unit Summary Our published newspaper will allow the students to gain an understanding of the cause and effect relationships in connection with the role of Virginia in the Civil War. The student will draw conclusions and make generalizations about the role of Virginia in the Civil War and will give the students an opportunity to explore specific Virginians and know what their role was in the Civil War. Student synthesize Civil War information by publishing an old time newspaper.

Curriculum-Framing Questions What conflicts developed between the northern and southern states in the years following the American Revolution that led to the Civil War? Why did Virginia secede from the Union? How did West Virginia become a state? Content Questions Essential Question Is war necessary? Unit Questions What major Civil War battles were fought in Virginia? Who were some of the leaders of the Civil War?

Civil War Project This project will help my students develop 21 st century skills by: Collaborating with peers Collecting and analyzing data Drawing conclusions Communicating their ideas and findings to others Asking and refining questions Creating and publishing a newspaper

Gauging Student Needs Assessment Purpose of the assessment To gather information about what students already know and what they wonder about the Civil War. What I want to learn from my students? I want to find out what they already know about the Unit Questions and what they know about publishing a newspaper. How I have tried to promote higher-order thinking? I ask students to find relationships and draw conclusions about the necessity of the Civil War. How the assessment information helps me and my students plan for upcoming activities in the unit? If students have misconceptions about how to publish a newspaper, I can provide guidelines and steps. If students have different levels of understanding about the importance of gathering information about the Civil War in Virginia, I can provide various resources. We will revisit the assessment throughout the unit for students to add to their knowledge. What feedback or additional ideas I’d like? I would like help on my assessment. I think I need to elicit more higher order thinking, but I’m not sure how.

My Goals for the Course Find ways to get my students more interested in learning about the role of Virginia in the Civil War Learn about different kinds of technology my students and I can use Share ideas with other teachers

Goals for My Students To learn how historians collect and publish data T o become more independent learners

Request for Feedback Sources for picture to use Sources for newspaper site Ideas for helping students take more responsibility for their own learning
