Fur trading is France’s main source of income in North America. Fur trappers and traders adopted many Indian ways.

Why: Fighting over Fur trade. British colonist wanted to make $ by trapping fur. (Like the French had been doing)

Why: France blocked Britain from Moving West by building forts Ha Ha! You Can’t Get in!

Key People George Washington: Land Surveyor (made maps) for the British. He knew the land of the Ohio River Valley. Benjamin Franklin: First person to come up with the idea that the colonies should join together with one Government.

 Albany Congress met in 1754 to discuss a stronger alliance with the Iroquois and a united colonial defense.  Ben Franklin (Penn. Delegate) proposes Albany Plan of Union to create “one general government for 13 colonies to make laws, raise taxes and set up defense for the colonies.”

 Ben Franklin publishes the first political cartoon to promote the Albany Plan of Union.  Delegates vote to accept the plan, but it was not approved by any of the colonies.

 In 1755 Gen. Braddock and half of the British army are killed at Fort Duquesne (now Pittsburgh, PA).  This was a major defeat for the British. Fort Duquesne (present) General Braddock

 In 1759, Gen. James Wolfe captures the New France capital, Quebec with a surprise attack up steep cliffs along the St. Lawrence River.

 War officially ends in 1763 with the Treaty of Paris, signed by England and France.  French has no power in North America, Brit. gained Canada (eh?) and all Fr. lands east of the Mississippi, except New Orleans.  Spain gave up Florida to Brit., but received all Fr. lands west of the Mississippi River, along with New Orleans.
