The American Revolution British Rule

George III was King of Great Britain and King of Ireland from 25 October 1760 until the union of these two countries on 1 January 1801, after which he was King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland until his death. Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz

American or British? O The British Monarch made the rules and laws for all it’s citizens. O Elected officials became part of Parliament- these were their representatives that made and passed the laws for all British Citizens.

American or British? O Did this include the people of the 13 colonies? O Yes, however they were not allowed to vote in British elections. O Therefore, they could not elect representatives to parliament O Did they have representation? No.

American or British? O With out representation, should the colonists be self governing? This is where they make their own laws. O In some ways, the Colonists did make their own rules and laws to establish a government, but Parliament made sure that Colonists knew that Parliament was in charge and they were not a true democracy. (a government where the people take part)

American or British O In 1619, the House of Burgess was allowed to be established in Virginia. O Colonies were able to make their own laws and decisions. (Legislature) O The House of Burgess was made up of wealthy male property owners of each colony. O Each colony was also able to have a governor appointed by the King.

French and Indian War

O For a while the British Colonists ruled themselves for many years with no issues O Then, in 1753, the French in Canada began building forts in the Ohio River Valley-this land was claimed by Britain and France O The colonists viewed this as an attack

French and Indian War O During the war, the Indians helped both their French and Britain allies (friends of the war) O So…Great Britain sent their army to help the colonists. O The British defeated the French! O As a result, the French lands became British territory!

French and Indian War O The war was expensive! O But the citizens in Britain refused to pay more taxes to cover the cost. (Booooo) O The colonies had to pay for their part of the war, which was ok…however… O Colonists were mad that Parliament stepped in and made tax laws for them. (Something they had done for themselves)

Really?? O The colonists then grew more angry when the King: O Told them they could no longer settle the land they just won from France. O It was to be hunting lands for the Indians O He also decided he could change any laws made by the colonies he did not like.
