The Road to Independence and Unity Colonial Governors and Legislatures Even though colonists were governed by royal governors and proprietors that they didn’t elect, they were able to communicate and express themselves through town meetings. Some of the Southern and Middle colonies also used county meetings. IN addition, some colonies, like Virginia were able to elect lawmakers.  This helped them develop political independence and law making powers/ self-government.

The Road to Independence and Unity English Bill of Rights The English Bill of Rights helped colonists feel more independent because it limited the power of the king. The king was not able to practice as much control over Britain and the English colonies because his nobles and Parliament took some of that power. Colonial Courts Colonists were able to control their own local affairs through the use of colonial courts. The colonial courts enforced laws that reflected the beliefs of their local communities  self expression and self government. Also protected INDIVIDUAL FREEDOMS. Colonists begin to get used to the idea that they have rights because of colonial courts.

The Road to Independence and Unity English Trade Laws England restricted colonial trade by requiring colonists to trade only with Britain. But the colonies produced a lot of raw materials that Britain benefitted from. Colonists realized they could get more money if they could trade with other countries. They felt that England was being unfair, but many colonial merchants became very wealthy from trading with Britain. This made them desire more economically. IT makes them want more economic independence.

The Road to Independence and Unity Great Awakening and Enlightenment This religious movement united colonists, despite coming from different regions/colonies, classes or races. The idea of spritiual equality also influenced the colonists to think that they are equal with people in Great Britain and should political equality and equal rights. Enlightenment- ideas about improving society and having a democratic government. Enlightenment writers like John Locke also talked about how people were born with natural rights like equality and liberty.

The Road to Independence and Unity French and Indian War French and some Indian tribes v. Great Britain, some Indian tribes, colonists. They fight over land. Colonists are required to fight by Great Britain.  Brings colonists together. They fight side by side. This unites them. Treaty of Paris Ends the war – Great Britain gets land in Canada and lands east of the Mississippi River. Colonists are happy because they want this land. Western Frontier and Proclamation of 1763 --Pontiac’s Rebellion. Remaining tribes that were allied to France continue to fight the British. Proclamation of 1763 -The British get mad and tell them they can keep their lands. The colonists get mad because they want those lands and thought that was the whole reason why they fought in the French and Indian War.
