1 The Quarrel with Britain Begins
What’s the point of winning a lot of land in a war if you’re not allowed to use it? Colonists had moved on to the land between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River

2 Colonists Claim New Land
France had given up their claim over the land Colonists were happy to have it all to themselves… thought it was not quite only theirs! The land was full of Native American tribes Some were allies of the British Tribes united with Chief Pontiac of the Ottawa tribe to drive out settlers Indians captured British forts and killed hundreds of settlers Great Britain thought for the time being they should keep the settlers out of the Indian homelands 1763: George III, the British king, issued a proclamation: Until further notice, no settlers were allowed to settle west of a line he drew on a map from New York to Georgia Colonists were angry- they had not won the war for the Indians British troops were stationed along the frontier to keep peace

3 The Quarrel Grows To win the French and Indian war, Britain poured lots of $$$ into ships, men, supplies… more $ than they had Britain now needed to repay the $ Needed more $ for troops stationed in forts on the American frontier WHERE TO GET THE MONEY?! Parliament’s answer- COLONISTS Begin paying taxes they should have ALREADY been paying (in Parliament’s opinion) Colonists had been smuggling goods in, so they didn’t have to pay taxes Parliament sent more officials to make sure the colonist paid taxes for goods, especially taxes on molasses and sugar

4 The Quarrel Grows Cont’d
Officials- search colonists’ homes and businesses WITHOUT the owner’s permission Trying to prove they smuggled goods or broke other laws WHAT ABOUT THE RIGHTS OF THE ENGLISHMEN?! Government officials are not allowed to search anyone’s property without legal permission How could their own British government take away this right?

5 More Taxes Many troops were left in America after the French and Indian War Britain wanted to keep them there, so they came up with the Quartering Act Quartering Act: the colonist government had to provide furnished quarters for all the British troops Americans were not happy- Why would the British government want to keep troops in the colonies? Protection? If so, against whom? Or to make the colonist obey British laws? Should colonists have to pay for the troops?

6 The Stamp Act Crisis 1765- Parliament passed the Stamp Act
Made colonists pay a tax on any kind of printed paper About 50 items in all, including newspapers, marriage licenses, and even playing cards!

7 Tax On Paper Colonist would buy special stamps from a tax collector
Buy a newspaper, minister’s sermon, calendar, marriage license, legal or business paper, playing cards… Pay a tax. Place a stamp on each side of the item they purchased Colonists were ANGRY- they did not want to pay the taxes! Do you see why the colonist were so angry? Was it their own colonial assemblies that had passed this tax law? No. British Parliament, 3,000 miles away, was responsible for this Called “taxation without representation”

8 Tax On Paper Cont’d 29-year-old Patrick Henry strongly opposed the Stamp Act Part of the Virginia assembly (Virginia House of Burgesses) Made a fiery speech protesting the tax Speech was printed in newspapers Formed groups called the Sons and Daughters of Liberty Stamp collectors were felt threatened (a few were even beat up) Many tax collectors left town Sons of Liberty organized a boycott (an organized campaign in which people refuse to have any dealings with a particular group or country in order to force a change of policy) Daughters of Liberty- made homemade cloth so colonists could purchase cloth without having to buy from British merchants Colonists who were against the Stamp Act began calling themselves Patriots

9 Tax On Paper Cont’d 9 colonies sent representatives to a meeting held in New York The meeting became known as the Stamp Act Congress Asked Parliament to repeal (cancel or do away with) the hated Stamp Act British government was shocked by the colonists actions Never before had the American colonists acted against the British government British merchants were upset- losing lots of $ 1766: after only one year, Parliament did repeal the Stamp Act Americans lit bonfires in celebration Americans still loved the King No one was talking about leaving the empire Just a little quarrel… Right?
