MPI/ATLAS H.-G. Moser MPI, Munich Detector Status Delivered: 86% IV measured: 58% + Visual insp.: 39% fail : ~5%

MPI/ATLAS H.-G. Moser MPI, Munich Assembly Status at MPI 6 mechanical dummy modules made 1 midxf: mm (tolerance 0.01 mm) 2Ok 3Midxf: mm (tolerance 0.01 mm) 4Midxf: mm (tolerance 0.01 mm) 5Ok 6Midxf: mm (tolerance mm) Problem identified, improved fixation mechanism needed

MPI/ATLAS H.-G. Moser MPI, Munich Module Assembly

MPI/ATLAS H.-G. Moser MPI, Munich Endcap Module Status K5 works: stable, no oscillations Original plan: FDR in July 2002, PRR: October, Production start in 2003 (21 months) However, two new problems showed up: - high noise after irradiation - poor performance of cooling system

MPI/ATLAS H.-G. Moser MPI, Munich K5 Status –All modules are stable –New K5 hybrid 7 measured in testbeam 6 measured in system test 2 irradiated –K5 modules were built rapidly & reliably inside mechanical specs. –Electrical performance is within specification pre-irradiation –Measure the same performance in the lab and in system test ( without noise injection zProblems with the stability of the EC module have been fixed. z16 modules (outer, middle, inner) have been built & measured in 5 sites

MPI/ATLAS H.-G. Moser MPI, Munich Unirradiated Modules

MPI/ATLAS H.-G. Moser MPI, Munich Irradiated Modules 2 outer modules irradiated in May, annealed for 6days at RT and then measured in the testbeam First results do not meet specification: –Post irradiation gain is low ~30mV/fC –Median charge collected is low ~ 2.7fC –Noise is high ENC~2300e –Specification: < 1900e Results are preliminary & will be checked before FDR; 2 more modules will be irradiated Perhaps problem with pre-series ASICs (from corner run)

MPI/ATLAS H.-G. Moser MPI, Munich Thermal Performance 3 modules thermally cycled: no significant change in mechanical or electrical properties Reproducibility of grease contact checked on 4 modules First thermal measurements on 1 middle and 1 inner module (non- irradiated.) agree with simulation at 10% level First measurement of CC blocks on CuNi pipe and evaporative cooling show that this requires coolant at –24°C Specification: coolant at –21°C Work needed to improve CC blocks

MPI/ATLAS H.-G. Moser MPI, Munich Plans for FDR/PRR Valencia SCT week: FDR should be delayed, combined FDR/PRR in October when open issues are resolved However, in the IB this was discussed: - very negative message to ATLAS (milestone missed) - further delays probable Endcap community was encouraged to keep to original schedule FDR will be August 6 (exclude post irradiation and thermal issues) Open issues should be resolved till PRR in October Continue prototyping, tests, qualification (material for 100 moduels ordered Start tender procedures
