2 Ronald Lipton Parts Status Sensors –Received 112 of 120 ordered ~July 31 (8 others in ~Nov) –All IV, CV tested at FNAL – 3 out of spec due to large  I/  V. Will be used for prototypes –No bad channels ! (spec 1%) –Four sensors sent to StonyBrook for strip probing –Will irradiate test structures plus a sensor at KSU Analog Cables –Received and tested mid-July – look very good Fixtures –Most now received from MSU - detailing the last sets this week

3 Ronald Lipton Parts Status Pitch Adapters –Received 13 (71  m) + 34 (81  m) pitch adapters from TFT mid August (ordered 50+50, need 24+24). We require 100% good lines and the yield is low. –TFT overall quality is ~ok, wirebond strengths 6-7 grams. Expect to receive order of 50+50 from TFT Seigert Sept. 10 th. We will then decide if we need to press for the remainder of the TFT order. Hybrids –Received 119/120(ordered) last Thursday 69 should meet all specs 50 cut 8 mils long – should be OK –Will stuff 10 at SiDet to check functionality and for use in prototype modules

4 Ronald Lipton Support Structure A prototype support structure to be used for electrical testing was received Aug 11. Mechanical damage was noted when the part was unpacked. The structure was broken at z=0 and one of the sensor-hybrid joints. The part was packed in a cardboard tube surrounded by bubble wrap inside a ~8” diameter ABS plastic tube. –The outer tube was permanently deformed with a sagitta of ~1” – this corresponds to hundreds of pounds of force if the cylinder is simply supported The ABS tube was not sufficiently rigid to withstand the load. The bubble wrap was too rigid and transmitted the bend to the inner cylinder – Bad packing design. The structure was repaired by injecting epoxy into the cracked areas – can be used for electrical tests

6 Ronald Lipton Support Structure The shipping problems should not delay the final structure New inner mandril is being machined using low stress steel Need to fabricate the (complex) manifold structures Expect on-time delivery (Mid Oct) of final support structure –Well off the critical path Most other mechanical parts in hand –Mesh spacers, ceramic standoffs …. Cables are being fabricated –Digital junction cable ordered –Twisted pair cable received

7 Ronald Lipton Modules We now have all parts necessary for modules. Plan: Build a set of four 71 micron pitch modules to populate a segment of the prototype support cylinder for a full wedge electrical test. These will be built with the final fixtures We will then decide if we want more prototypes for testing 71/81 stack or can go into final module production (beginning to mid October) First Prototype module built last week: Bias current 150 nA @ 100 V (Depletion voltage 200 V) Noise ~ 22 counts @ 100 V 32 counts @ 0 V Bonding problems

8 Ronald Lipton Fall 2004 Shutdown Survey of the Z=0 gap (more later) We plan to install and operate a 4-hybrid SVX4 string during the 2004 shutdown. This will allow us to test a mixed SVX2/4 readout system with the associated controls and download software. Reroute H disk cables to accommodate L0 requirements (separate inner and outer) Operate the cooling system at lower temperature No H disk refurbishment The work associated with floating the platform was deemed to take too much time to allow for this work

9 Ronald Lipton Aperture Measurement We plan to measure the aperture at z=0 using standard survey instruments (Brunson) This was mocked up in Lab 3

12 Ronald Lipton Lab 3 Test Membranes to simulate those of the Run 2a support structure were located at the following nominal z-positions in mm (inches): –+/- 0.317 (0.012) –+/- 540.466 (21.294) –+/- 829.819 (32.670) All apertures were nominally 1.875” in diameter. Those at z = 0 were nominally offset horizontally by 0.062”. A simulated 96” long beam tube with a flange diameter =1.697” extended through the simulated Run 2a structure. A pair of external CF cylinders blocked light and access Cardboard sheets were used to represent the ends of the L1-4 structure. A Brunson survey instrument was used for the measurements. We found that a ROI light source for a CMM provided good illumination. All Brunson images were clear and distinct, with no color bands

13 Ronald Lipton Aperture Measurement A 0.059” membrane offset was measured using the Brunson, compared to 0.060” measured on a CMM The technique works but there must be proper illumination and support for the survey instruments The inner H disks do not have to be removed for the survey. Removing the outer disks would make the survey easier because of the limited space between the beam pipe and the H disk cover. We have decided to try the survey without removing the outer H disks – but will be prepared to remove and reinstall them if necessary. Expect to begin this work ~ Sept. 27

14 Ronald Lipton Layer 0 Summary All parts ~in hand –Need to stuff and test hybrids –Need to receive Seigert pitch adapters –Verify performance of new hybrids We will survey the installation gap during the shutdown We will install 4 SVX4 test strings and recable the H disk readout – this will give us operational experience with a mixed system and force us to develop and test software. Expect to begin module production in late October – depending on hybrid stuffing schedule On or ahead of schedule for July 21 move date with ~6 weeks of SiDet testing
