1 Literacy of volleyball By: Kayla Bartlett

3 rd and 4 th grade  Ryan Fieler  Ryan was my first volleyball coach  She was a senior in high school & a role model  The Basics of Volleyball  No one had specific positions  Everyone played all the way around  Serving, Serve Receiving, Bump, Set, Spike

Found love for the game  Stayed after with Ryan  I would always stay after practice and work extra Ryan would hit balls at me and I would practice digging She taught me to over hand serve from the back line instead of under hand serving This is where I fell out of love with basketball and in love with volleyball

5 th – 8 th grade  Junior Olympic Volleyball (Aleta Aces)  Club volleyball is for the more talented athlete  Usually girls that play club are looking to further their volleyball career and play in college  I played club from 10 years old until I turned 18 years old  We always held the title of being 1 st or 2 nd best team in the state

Bradd Jeffers  Bradd was my coach from 10 years old to 16 years old  We met through club volleyball because he picked my team to be the coach of  He also coached at Alexander High School  Major Teachings  Court Culture  More than Basics

Court culture  Good Court Culture  Always talking  Reconnecting with teammates after messing up  Letting mistakes go  Keeping a good attitude  Bad Court Culture  Not talking  Pouting after making a mistake  Not connecting with teammates  Having a poor attitude

More than the basics  Bradd taught us the game in a much more dynamic way  Divided into positions I got turned into a setter  Not just bump, set, spike Turned to base defense and transitioning Pass, set, hit, base, blocking, transition

Briana adamovsky  Played the setter position at Ohio University  Later went pro and go to go overseas  She coached me in private sessions  Focused on footwork  Wallies: setting to yourself on the wall over and over again  Setters are the leaders on the court

Transferred to alexander  I transferred from Federal Hocking to Alexander  The game was much different comparing both of the schools  Federal Hocking was still playing old school volleyball  While Alexander had coaches that were willing to go find the new teachings of volleyball

Jamie Welsh  Jamie coached me my 8 th grade year at Alexander  She coached different than how I was coached by Bradd in club Everyone got playing time More about having fun not just focused on winning

Freshmen year  This was the pivotal moment of my volleyball career  We became the Division III State Champions of 2008  Learned the value of team  Dedication to each other  Competed among one another  Pushed each other  Had and made common goals  I went from setting to being a defensive specialist  Instead of playing all the way around I only played back row  Had to learn how to read the other team on offense and defense

Sophomore – Senior year  Nick Wendt and Joe Super became the high school varsity coaches  I went from just knowing right back to being the libero and playing middle back  Helped me contact college coaches  Nick and Joe compared to Bradd  Bradd held everyone to high standards  Nick and Joe were much more laid back  Bradd focused on the fine details  Nick and Joe focused more on reading and defending

Hiram college  Scott Carter  Head volleyball coach at Hiram college  Held very high expectations  Team Moto  “Strong, Capable, Committed…Hiram Team First”  Demands of School and Volleyball  We had study tables and in order to get out of study tables we had to keep a 3.0 GPA or higher  When we stepped foot on the court it was an expectation to perform at a very high level at all times, “bad days” were unacceptable

College vs. High school  Weight Training  High School: trained during season and pre season  College: trained all year round  Attitudes  High School: some played to win, some did not  College: everyone was there to get playing time and to win every game  Defense  High School: transitioned every time to a certain spot  College: transitioned slightly based only on the block 

Coaching at elite  I coached 16 year olds who had only played one year of volleyball before this  I used the teachings that I had learned from my coaches over the years and applied my knowledge to teaching them  I had very high expectations because of the volleyball levels that I played on  This had to change because at 16 years old I had already had 7 years of volleyball under my belt, where these girls only had 1 year  We went from not scoring more than 10 points in our first game to winning our state volleyball tournament bracket

Steps of coaching  I went into coaching like the girls already had a base knowledge of the game  They did not, we had to start from the basics  Basics  Bump, set, spike  Next Level  Separated by positions  Taught the difference of defense, and offense  Taught them how to read while defending  Pass, set, hit, serve receive, serving, base, blocking, approaches ect…  Ended the season with our first 4 consecutive wins!!!
