VOLLEYBALL FRESHMEN PE CURRICULUM

GENERAL RULES Each team consist of six players 3 players are front row players and three players are back row players. Position of the players- Left Front-Center Front- Right Front, Left Back-Center Back- Right Back. Foot Fault- On a serve, both feet must remain completely behind the end line until the ball is contacted. A player may not step completely over the center line. Each team is allowed to have three touches before hitting the ball over the net. The same player can not hit the ball twice in a row. Players rotate in a clockwise position. Any ball that lands on the line is good,

GENERAL RULES CONTINUED The object of the game is to send the ball over the net so that the opposing team cannot return the ball or prevent it from hitting the ground in their court. The ball is put into play with a serve that is hit by the server over the net to the opponents. The volley continues until the ball hits the playing court, goes out of bounds, or a team fails to return it properly. When the receiving team wins the volley, it wins the point, and gains the right to serve while the players rotate one position clockwise. When the serving team wins the volley, it wins a point and the right to continue serving.

FOULS A player holds or throws the ball. A player touches the net with any part of the body or hands or reaches over the net. A player plays out of position when the ball is being served.

ILLEGAL HITS Carry – Momentarily holding the ball Lift – Contacting the ball with an open palm when the palm faces an upward direction. Blocking, and spiking a serve. Double Hit – contacting the ball twice by the same person.

SCORING In rally scoring both the serving team and the receiving team can score. When the serving team fails to score, it is a side out and the receiving team gets a point and becomes the serving team. The game is played to 25 points unless both teams are tied and then you must win by 2pts. A match consists of: winning two out of three games.

SERVING Each player serves in turn and continues to serve until the volley is lost (side out). The ball must clear the net on the serve. After a team has lost its serve, the team receiving the ball for the first serve must rotate one position clockwise before serving. Body Position – Body faces the net with shoulders parallel to the net and the end line. Feet are either parallel or slightly staggered and knees are flexed Ball toss – The ball is tossed 2-3 feet above the head and about 1 1/2 feet forward of shoulder striking hand. The weight transfers from back foot to front foot. Action of the striking motion resembles a baseball throw.

MECHANICS OF SKILLS Pass – Knees are bent, feet are shoulder width apart. Body leans forward Do not join hands Hands and arms are above the knees

SET Body positioning – Setter must move to get body directly under the ball Hands are above the forehead prior to contact with the ball Ball Contact – The thumbs, index fingers, and forefingers are the main contacting areas on the ball
