1 College Soccer Coach

2 About Me I am an 8 th grade student here at Monroe Middle School. I play on a soccer team, a baseball team, and a basketball team. I enjoy doing community service where I used to play baseball. It is a program called “Challenger Baseball”. It was created so that kids with physical and mental disabilities could play baseball. I like to play sports and spend time with my friends in my spare time.

5 Why I chose College Soccer Coach  I want to help players have a good experience with soccer  I want to teach life skills through soccer

6 My personal connection I have been surrounded by good college soccer coaches my entire life. From them I learned how to be a good player and what a good coach looks like.

7 Researching Education For Coaching  A college degree is not required to coach  A high school degree is required  Required licenses will be discussed later

8 Researching What a Coach Does A coach:  Plans practices  Teaches players tactical plans  Runs tactical drills  Oversees eligibility paperwork  Coaches players during the game

9 Researching Coaching Licenses  There are 6 levels of coaching licenses (F through A)  Division 1 coaching requires an A level license  Division 3 coaching requires a B level license

10 Researching Coaching Approach A coach:  Develops a philosophy of coaching  Understands players’ strengths and weaknesses  Trains to fill the gaps

11 Researching Coaching Recruiting  “90% of coaching college soccer is recruiting” Gregg Murphy Associate Women’s Head Coach, Santa Clara University  Recruiting is driven by coaching philosophy and the team’s needs

12 Research Reflection  College Coaches are constantly coaching their players on and off the field  In fact coaches have private meetings with each player once every week  Coaches talk to their players about more than soccer. They discuss school, social life and other issues raised by the player

13 Activity: How to get an F license  Check CYSA website (www.calnorth.org)www.calnorth.org  F license facts: Beginner level license Only requirement is age 14 or older

14 Activity: Take an F license course  F license course has 2 parts  Classroom focus: how to motivate players  Field focus: Return demonstration of practice drills

15 Activity: Practice drills for skills and physical fitness  Learned how to assess players’ ball skills and conditioning  Practiced drills to improve ball skills  Practiced drills to improve conditioning

16 Activity: Practice how to coach for Mental Strength  Learned how to assess player individual knowledge and team chemistry  Set team goals  Developed drills to support team goals

17 Activity: Identifying Recruiting Opportunities  Learned how to assess team needs  Learned about showcase tournaments (Dallas, Orlando, and State Cups)

18 Reflection  I enjoyed learning about college soccer coaching  I liked seeing a different perspective of the game  I would definitely still pursue this career

19 Next Steps  I plan to graduate from high school  After high school I plan to go to College
