3 Task It was not just Charles’ fault that the English Civil War broke out. James I was responsible as well. There are many causes for the war. They can be categorised as short and long term. Which were the Short Term Causes of the English Civil War Which were the Long Term Causes of the Civil War. Short Term Long Term Divine Right – James & Charles expected Parliament to do what they wanted without argument. Money Problems – This lead to James & Charles clashing with Parliament Religion – There was mistrust between the Catholics and the Protestants across the UK.

4 Most Important. Least Important. Ireland.1641
There was a catholic uprising in Ireland. Parliament did not trust the King to take control of the army. Most Important. Divine Right Charles I was unwilling to accept that parliament should be able to disagree. Ship Tax 1635 The ship tax was normally only paid during war. He made everybody pay it. Selling Titles Charles I was short of money. He forced nobles into lending him money against and sold titles and knighthoods for cash. The Birds had flown… 1642 Charles went into parliament and to arrest 5 MP’s. This was a gross misuse of his powers and rights. Dismisses Parliament 1639 Charles I dismissed parliament and only recalled them when he needed to raise more money. Religion Many people did not like Catholics. Charles married a Catholic and appointed an Archbishop who supported catholic worship. Scotland 1640 Charles I tried to introduce a new prayer book to Scotland. This caused the Scots to raise an army and invade England.   Spending Despite problems with money, Charles spent a lot of money on works of art.  Least Important.

Which one of your causes meant that the war broke out in August 1642, and not later? Examples “In conclusion the English Civil Was has many causes but the …. must be counted as the most important because …” “However you could say that the ….
