Charles I defies Parliament Charles I takes the throne in 1625 Charles starts a war with France & Spain - needs money! Parliament refuses to give Charles the money, so Charles dismisses the Parliament (#1) Charles can’t raise the money, so he has to recall Parliament Parliament forces him to sign the Petition of Right The petition states that the King: 1) Can’t tax w/o Parliament 2) Can’t dismiss Parliament 3) Must follow Magna Carta Charles signs the petition and gets his money Later, Charles ignores Petition & then dismisses Parliament again (#2) In order to get more money, he imposes fees & fines
