2. Two Forms
There were two forms of education in ancient Greece: formal and informal. Formal education was attended through attendance to a public school or was provided by a hired tutor. Informal information was provided by an unpaid teacher, and occurred in a non-public setting.

3. Athens
In ancient Athens, the purpose of education was to produce citizens trained in the arts, and to prepare citizens for both peace and war.
Until and 6 or so, boys were taught at home by their mother or by a male slave. From age 6 to 14, boys went to a neighborhood primary school or to a private school.

4. Facts
Education was only available to boys. Only boys could go to school.
Their education was expensive.
Spartan education was quite different from schooling in Athens.
Some abandoned babies were picked up and raised as slaves.
Education was not entrusted to families or tutors.
At the age of 7 Spartan boys were removed from their homes and sent to live in austere barracks where they were subjected to rigid discipline.
