BRITISH CONTROL

Proclamation of 1763 Stopped colonists from living west of Appalachian Mountains The British did this to control westward expansion and to keep peace between the colonists and Native Americans. The colonists did not like their movement being controlled by Britain.

Map of Proclamation of 1763

Taxes 1.After the French and Indian War, Britain needed money. 2.The war was very expensive for Britain, so they decided to tax the colonists who they “protected” in the war. 3.They increased taxes on the 13 Colonies.

Sugar Act (1764) 1.It lowered the sugar tax. 2.Britain hoped to stop the smuggling of sugar. 3.British were allowed to search colonists homes to look for smuggled goods. 4.The colonists did not like this because they felt they should feel secure in their own homes.

Stamp Act (1765) 1.The law taxed paper in the colonies. 2.Colonists were mad because it was a direct tax on the colonies. And they weren’t allowed to vote! 3.The cry was “No taxation without representation.”

Stamp Act Video

Protesting! 1.Colonists boycotted (refused to buy goods) all goods made in Britain. 2.British businesses lost money, and the Stamp Act was repealed, which means cancelled. 3.This was a victory for the colonists.

Townshend Acts (1767) 1.Britain taxed the colonists on imported goods such as paper, tea, and glass. 2.By now, any British taxes angered the colonists. 3.Colonists protested even more. 4.Women started the Daughters of Liberty and urged the colonists to wear clothes made in the colonies, not clothes made in Britain.

Below are two examples of British stamps that were used.
