1 11/3: Chain of Events: Causes of the Revolution 14 The French and Indian War caused Britain to tax the colonists more and limit expansion Proclamation of 1763: GB wanted to end fighting so they limited westward growth. Made people angry! Etc….

2 French and Indian War- Between French and British in N. America (1745-1763) Britain won; France lost all land in N. America

3 Proclamation of 1763 Britain said no more moving west of the Appalachian Mtns Speculators (investors) who had bought land there were furious

4 Britain wants to get rid of debt from F&I War: 1.Sugar Act (1764): law that put a tax on molasses 2.Stamp Act (1765): tax on all printed goods (newspapers, wills, playing cards etc.  needed to be stamped by the British)

5 Colonists were ANGRY about Stamp Act! “No Taxation Without Representation!!” Protestors burned unpopular tax collectors in effigy

6 Stamp Act Repealed 1766: British Parliament repealed Stamp Act Colonists happy!! But...

7 Townshend Acts (1767) Taxed imported goods Glass, tea, paper, lead

8 Daughters of Liberty Colonists boycott imported goods Women created the “Daughters of Liberty-” urged people to use and wear only American-made things

9 Boston Massacre Scuffle between colonists and British soldiers leaves 5 colonists dead, including Crispus Attucks Colonists FURIOUS!!

10 Propaganda Propaganda-information used to influence opinion Bostonians used massacre to increase anti-British feelings

11 Committee of Correspondence- Committee of Correspondence- created by colonists to help get info out about the colonists’ grievances, or problems, with Britain

12 Boston Tea Party To protest Tea Act (1773), colonists, dressed as Mohawks, dumped 342 chests of tea into the water

13 Intolerable Acts King George III punished Boston 1774-Coercive Acts- closed Harbor, banned town mtgs, and forced colonists to keep British soldiers in their houses (Quartering)

14 Continental Congress 1774-colonists met in Philadelphia, PA to create a political body to challenge British control

15 What events did we discuss in class that caused the colonists to be angry at Britain? Do you agree with their argument of “No Taxation without Representation?” Explain your answer.
