Individually, read the text section “The Treaty of Versailles and the handout containing some key provisions of the Treaty As a group: Make a list of the losses, restrictions, and burdens that the Treaty inflicts on Germany and make sure each group member writes the list in his/her notes Discuss the following questions In what ways do you think the Treaty was different than Germany expected What do you think was the German reaction to the treaty?

7 The German Response Individually read the handout “The German Reply” Do your best When you come to something you don’t understand, mark it and read on As a group, discuss, develop and write down answers to the following questions: What provisions of the treaty are the Germans complaining about? What predictions do they make about the effects of the treaty?

8 Treaty of Versailles Read the “Securing the Peace” packet or “A Troubled Treaty” on page in your text, starting with “Wilson heads to Paris” and respond to the following in writing: How might the decisions made at the Paris Peace Conference have made new conflicts more likely? Consider how this might have caused bitterness and resentment and / or how it left disputes unsolved.

Read “Financial Collapse” (906), “A Global Depression” (907), “Effects Throughout the World” (908). Answer the following questions in writing: What action did the collapse of the American economy trigger in the United States. How did those actions affect the countries of Europe and the rest of the world? Why do you think Germany was particularly hard hit?

11 Hitler and the Nazis Individually read the two handouts: “The 25 Points” and “Hitler’s Speech on the Treaty of Versailles As a group discuss, develop and write down an answer to the following question: Why might Nazi ideas and Hitler as the Nazi’s leader have been attractive to the German people In answering try to be as specific as possible and explain why certain ideas would be attractive.
