2. Verbs: Verbs are words that express action or state of being, and they are an essential part of a complete sentence. There are two categries of verbs: action verbs and inking verbs.

3. Action Verb: Action verbs are words that express action Eg. The girl smells the flower.

4. Transitive Verb A transitive verb is an action verb that needs a direct object to complete its meaning. Eg. The girl licked her fingers.

5. Intransitive Verb An intransitive verb is an action verb that is not followed with a direct object. Eg. The boy walks.

6. Linking Verb Linking Being Link the subject to an adjective or another noun. Eg. The flower smells lovely. This shows a state of being. Eg. She is happy.

7. Difference between Action and Linking. One shows action and the other does not. An action verb show Action, and a linking verb does not.

8. Identifying Linking verbs A linking verb does not show action instead they connect the subject to additional information about the subject. Eg. Mary is a shopaholic. (‘Is’ isn’t something marry can do. ‘Is’ connects the subject to additional information about Mary.)

9. Identifying Action Verbs When Identifying an action verb you ask: What's happening? or What's being done? Eg. Sally runs fast. (What’s happening? Sally runs. So ‘runs’ will be your action verb.)

10. Auxiliary Verbs An auxiliary verb is a verb which makes a present participle a verb. E.g.. The girls are running in the race.

11. Modal Verbs A modal is a type of an auxiliary verb. A modal can show mood or tense. You can start the sentence as a question. You can turn a sentence around. (split the verb) Eg. He can run. Is the original sentence. ‘Can he run?’ Is the same sentence, but now is asked as a question Note: A modal never has a ‘s’.

13. Present Particple A present particple is a word ending in ‘ing’. It can be used as a verb if an auxiliary comes before it. Eg. They are painting
