2. What is a verb? A verb shows action as well as a state of being.
I am tired.
I am a teacher.
Madison ran down the hall screaming.

3. Verb tenses Past- the action occurred in the past
- verb usually ends in -d or –ed
Ex. I talked on the phone last night.
I ran in the race yesterday.
Present- the action is happening right now
Ex. Dee works on his assignments.
Witt laughs at Jack.
Future- the action will happen in the future
- will + verb
Ex. Tamara will play basketball next year.

4. Main & Helping Verbs Main verb = action word
Helping verb = before action word, helps with verb tense
Ex. Ally will eat dinner tonight.
Ben is running in circles.

5. Linking Verbs
A linking verb connects the subject of the sentence with a noun or adjective in the predicate (these are called predicate nouns and predicate adjectives).
They help make a statement.
Ex. Lennon is a singer.
G is smart.

6. Perfect Tense
A perfect tense tells about something that happened at an indefinite time in the past.
It can also tell about an action that has happened in the past and is still happening now.
Perfect tenses are formed with the helping verb have/has/had and a main verb.
Ex. I have played violin for many years.

7. Progressive Tense Progressive tense shows an action that is on-going.
Progressive verbs end in –ing
Ex: running, walking, singing

8. Transitive & Intransitive Verbs
A transitive verb has a direct object.
An intransitive verb does not have a direct object.
Ex. Maggie read a book about pants.
Patricia read in a hurry.

9. Verb phrase The verb phrase is the main verb plus the helping verb.
Ex. Anna will play softball tonight.

10. Principal parts
Infinitive: base form (present tense) Present participle: is, am, are + -ing form of verb Past: past tense Past participle: have, has + past tense verb
