Today we are going to read through the course expectations

What will we learn in 7 th grade? –Earth and Space science systems. This one-year course for seventh-grade scholars focuses on understanding Earth and Space science systems. Students will use scientific processes, protocols, and tools, including inquiry, to build understanding of Earth’s structure and place in the Solar System, atmospheric processes, and composition of matter. Critical thinking, collaboration, accuracy, and communication skills will be practiced as scholars extend their scientific literacy. This course is required for seventh-grade students.

Assessments Include –Daily monitoring of progress –Tests/Quizzes –Projects –End of Semester Exams

Outline and Pacing of course 1 st Quarter2 nd Quarter3 rd Quarter4 th Quarter Science Processes Safety Plate Tectonics Rocks, Minerals, and Soil Water CycleMeteorology Constructive & Destructive Forces FossilsAtmosphereAstronomy

Course Goals To increase scientific literacy and content knowledge of Earth and space systems. To develop abilities and understanding needed to safely engage in structured and original scientific inquiry. To experience the nature of scientific endeavors. To understand the nature and properties of matter. To describe how living things, Earth, solar system and universe are composed of matter. To describe electric and magnetic properties of matter in Earth systems. To use scientific evidence to explore the nature of change over time. To explain the observed and predictable patterns which occur in the Universe. To describe the nature and characteristics of waves in Earth and space systems. To understand how catastrophic events on Earth are representative of energy transformations. To develop a view of Earth as a dynamic system involving the flow of matter and energy in cyclical processes. To describe the composition, properties, and processes of the atmosphere. To describe the characteristics of the Solar System and its influences on Earth. To develop awareness of career opportunities in science and related educational requirements.

Ready by Exit! As a class, we will be working towards two big goals: We will work toward mastery of 7 th grade science standards. We will work hard to demonstrate academic growth and get you ready for 8 th grade.

Hours of Availability Students may schedule time for assistance with science coursework before or after school on Monday through Friday. Contact is best made via email from parents and/or guardians or you may call the school at 799-8080 extension 4707 Please leave a preferred method and time of contact, as well as a short message explaining your reason for contact. I will respond within 24 hours. Additionally, please check Infinite Campus for further information and updates regarding coursework and student progress. Email and phone contacts are available for all teachers on the school website at www.burkholderms.org.

Class Expectations To get the most out of this class you must be willing to step up to every challenge, try your best, ask questions, participate in class discussions, and always reflect on your learning. Therefore it is expected that all members of this class follow our school code of conduct (PROWL) and class procedures to ensure an efficient and productive learning environment. Additionally, it is imperative that every scholar comes to class prepared with necessary materials, a positive attitude, and a desire to learn. A CITIZENSHIP grade will be distributed each quarter and will be determined according to Burkholder’s Citizenship Rubric located in this handout and on the school website.

Attendance/Failing Grades/Retention Enforcement Attending school on a regular basis is vital to academic success. Students who miss more than 10 unapproved absences in any course during a semester (18 weeks) shall receive a failing semester grade for that course. An approved absence, as defined, is an unavoidable absence caused by illness, court appearances, religious holidays, and an emergency outside the control of student or student’s family, or a prearranged absence (not exceeding 10 in a school year).

Infinite Campus The Infinite Campus web/phone-based applications allow parents to examine up-to- date information about their child’s grades, attendance, school announcements, academic planning for high school, and more. To access Infinite Campus, you must receive your login ID and password from your student’s school. If you have students in various schools, you have to visit only one of the schools to receive your login information to access information about any of your children's information. All students are expected to monitor their progress on a weekly/daily basis by logging into Infinite Campus at campus.ccsd.net and check for missing work, academic planning, messages and more.

Evaluation and Grading Policy Summative Assessments = 70% Formative Assessments = 30% Final exams are weighted at 20%

Re-Do Policy At Burkholder Middle School not only are students allowed to re-do assignments and tests for full credit; it is mandatory that students strive for mastery/proficiency of all content taught by continuing to improve over time. Always—“at teacher discretion” It must be within reason. Students must give a sincere effort. Parent signature is required on original assignment/test. Must keep original (and all additional) copies of the assignment/test/together. Submit a plan of study (ACTION PLAN) that will enable student to improve performance. Identify a day by which time it will be accomplished or the grade will be permanent. Teacher reserves the right to give alternative version of assignment/test. Teacher reserves the right to deny the option for re-do. No re-do’s the last week of the grading period.

Make-Up Work CCSD Regulation: Teachers shall provide an opportunity for a student to make-up missed work due to any absence, and students shall be held accountable for the work. When a student is absent, however, the educational experiences lost during that absence might be irretrievable because instruction and interaction in the instructional setting cannot be duplicated through makeup work. The student will have three (3) days in which to contact the teacher to complete make-up work.

Make-up Procedures After any absence, a secondary student is required to initiate contact with his teacher(s) to obtain appropriate make-up work within three (3) school days immediately following the absence. Once contact has been made with the teacher(s), specific make- up work must be completed and returned to the teacher(s) within a reasonable length of time, to be determined by the teacher and communicated to the student/parent or legal guardian. The make-up work must be returned to the teacher(s) by the specified due date if it is to be acknowledged. Students shall be allowed a minimum of (3) three days to complete make-up work.

Behavioral Expectations You are expected to review and abide by the PROWL Code of Conduct, school policies, and district policies contained in the Parent/Student handbook/planner. P Be Prepared! R Be Respectful! O Be Orderly! W Do Whatever It Takes! L Learn All You Can!

ADDITIONAL CLASSROOM EXPECTATIONS Tardies (1/2 hour tardy equals 1 absence) A STUDENT IS CONSIDERED TARDY WHEN NOT INSIDE THE CLASSROOM WHEN THE BELL RINGS. Please review the Tardy Policy in the Parent/Student Planner on page 7. Food, drink, gum, candy, etc. are not allowed in class.

Student Planners Student planners are required material for every class. Teachers will require students to enter student learning objective, homework or projects and assessment information on a daily basis. Parents are encouraged to check these planners to monitor students’ work, to assist teachers in promoting organizational skills, and to help academic achievement. Planners also contain important dates, schedules and school phone numbers. All students will be given a planner upon enrollment after student fees are collected.

Materials The CCSD provides necessary supplies for all students in order to meet their educational needs. However, we know that sometimes parents choose to buy school supplies for their child. Should you decide to do this, the following are items that I would recommend for this class. These are suggested items and are not mandatory. Please contact the school counselor if assistance is needed with obtaining school supplies at any time. At Burkholder, our caring staff are committed to ensure the success of every student. A 3 ring binder for notes and handouts Loose leaf paper 2 sharpened pencils or mechanical pencils (bring extra lead) with an eraser Blue or black pen Color highlighter, and glue stick.
