3  What we will study: ◦ A variety of modern and classic novels and plays ◦ Supplemental texts, approached by theme ◦ Textbooks selections, approached chronologically ◦ Poetry ◦ Short stories ◦ Reading, writing, analysis – prep for upper grade courses and PSAT, SAT, SOL assessments ◦ Research

4  Emphasis is on skills – critical reading, writing, and analysis  What/how/why  Silent Sustained Reading  SAT/PSAT vocabulary study

5 Recommended supply list:  3 ring notebook with four dividers (Literature, Vocabulary, Writing, Grammar)  Notebook paper (not spiral)  Composition or Spiral Notebook (kept in room)  Blue or Black pens; #2 pencils and highlighters  Note cards  Agenda  Sticky Notes (optional)  Jump/thumb drive to transfer work (optional)

6  Assessments and Grades will come from: ◦ Writing ◦ Quizzes (regular vocabulary) ◦ Oral presentations ◦ Homework ◦ Projects ◦ Group assignments – class work ◦ participation

7  Rubrics – always!  Essay rubrics primarily based on writing assessment from SOL writing assessment, SAT format but will also include a wide variety of assignments  Homework, class work, participation – assessed for progress towards goal- low risk since they are formative assessments

8  Do your best: ◦ Keep up with reading ◦ Advocate for yourself – ask for help! ◦ Bring supplies ◦ No late homework ◦ Extra points for early papers and projects ◦ School rules apply

9  Use the restroom between classes! ◦ If you have an EMERGENCY, discreetly ask permission ◦ Sign out and be back in 2-5 minutes  Moving around the room: ◦ Remain seated during instruction ◦ You may move during group activities ◦ You may move if you have asked for permission ◦ Get a tissue, sharpen pencils, throw away trash, etc. before class starts or after instruction is finished

11  Entering the room: ◦ Enter quietly ◦ Take your seat ◦ Check the board for the agenda, the objectives and the bell ringer ◦ Begin bell ringer  Leaving the room: ◦ Wait for Mrs. Nielsen’s dismissal ◦ Gather your things and make sure you have all of your items ◦ Leave your desk and area straight and tidy for the next class

12  Answer emails and phone calls as quickly as possible  Be here each morning  Be here in the afternoon  Keep website current  Available: 7 th study hall, 8 th planning, here before school, after school with prior notice  Work with students and parents to help them be successful  Remediate  Enrich

13  Using and checking planner and website  Discussing novels, poems, class work with your parents and friends  Communicating with your teachers if there are issues we need to know  Having fun!
