5. How Culture Develops We adopt our culture from those who came before us We see the world through the lens of our culture

6. Material v. Nonmaterial Culture Material Culture- tangible items within society ▫Jewelry, art, music, clothing, architecture and crafts a society creates Nonmaterial Culture- nonphysical products of society ▫Symbols, values, rules, and sanctions

7. Symbols What do you think of when you see the U.S. flag? For most of us it’s more than just a piece of cloth, it’s a symbol.

8. Symbols Represent, suggest, or stand for something else Can be words, gestures, or even objects, and they often represent abstract or complex concepts Example: Wedding rings Each culture determines the meaning of its own symbols

Language Definition- system of speech and/or written symbols used to convey meaning and communicate Some languages are only spoken, while others are both spoken and written The UN reports there are currently more than 6,000 different languages on the planet Culture passing from one generation to the next through language

10. Imagine something for a minutes… What if the English language had no words for right, left, front, back? Would you still be able to understand these concepts? Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis- language determines a native speaker’s perception and categorization of experience

Values Part of a society’s nonmaterial culture Represents standards by which we determine what is good, bad, right and wrong For every positive value, we have a negative value (value pairs) Values can often support each other (value cluster) Some values are at odds with each other (value conflict)

13. Norms and Sanctions Norms are rules developed for appropriate behavior based on values ▫Vary from place to place (conditional) Sanctions: prize or punishment you receive when you either abide by or violate a norm ▫Positive/ negative sanctions

14. Folkways and Mores Folkways are informal norms- based on social expectations ▫Less severe sanctions Mores (MORE-ayes) are MORE serious ▫A society’s most important values Taboo is an act that is socially unacceptable
