Potential for social media AU Clubs Target Audience - Students - Sponsors - Alumni - Companies - BUCS - AU Pres

Why use social media Social media is a great tool for letting people know what you are up to. As a club you have a responsibility to inform Generate publicity/raise profile Build a club spirit Encourage interaction

Potential for social media Best ways to interact with users on social media Photos Videos

Have you ever spend more time than you should ‘researching’ someone on facebook? 1. No 2. Abstain 3. Yes 0 5 Countdown 10

Overall Guidelines Each club must have a Facebook Page & Twitter Profile Assign 2/3 people to be in charge of social media Facebook – at least 2-3 days a week – interesting videos/photos Twitter – can be daily – retweets/related links

Daily Guidelines Social media is exactly what it says – social! Be human on it! Sign off each message with who it is from – your initials e.g L.D Appropriate posts – I don’t care how squeaky your bed is!

Facebook You must have a page – not a person/profile/group etc. Moving a person to a page (can be done but takes a bit of time) Groups are designed for 500 people or less and private conversation Pages – the new timeline = great history!

Benefits of a Page Statistics Building a brand/club history A page with only 100 likes = 30-50 views per post Same page uploaded a photo album = 2500 views

Twitter What is twitter? Growing daily The news now finds you – we don’t search anymore Remember it is an open network and anyone can see what your saying!

Twitter Who uses twitter? You are only ever one tweet away from anyone, celeb, company, club etc. Retweeting? Lists?

Twitter Example of the importance of twitter to a company and how it could affect your club! Stakeholder interest – sponsors, alumni, university, AU, Union etc You are representing your club & all the students every time you tweet (sounds ridiculous but it is true!)

Twitter – Daily Use How to build followers? Keeping it consistent (use the initials and only allow 2/3 members) Keep up to date with news – retweeting is easy to do – follow Great Britain team or BBC sport and related articles People will follow you not just for daily updates of your hockey but also other related topics – you are more appealing!

Discipline DON’T BE THAT GUY! Think before you post As soon as it is on Facebook/Twitter/YouTube that’s it there is no going back! Jail sentence for twitter comments My Approach – Would I want my parents or boss to see it?

Discipline Twitter is so open be careful exactly what you post! As soon as you put something online people will share it, retweet it, post it etc. You don’t necessarily know who is following them and who is going to see it! A YouTube video the other day had 12million hits in less than 2 days You want your naked lap or pint downing being viewed by everyone?

Discipline Facebook – keep it social and only upload suitable photos and videos No nudity/initiations Avoid swearing Pages – if you are admin you will have control via your personal account You are responsible for this!

Rewards of Social Media Building an online presence and becoming well known More players/participants applying to Lufbra Sponsorship interest = £££ Opportunities - companies will target Lufbra for promotions

Social Media for you! Social Media is a great tool to get noticed now Your CV can be online (Linkedin) – recruiters can use it as a database to search for skills they want Twitter is an amazing source that people haven’t tapped into yet – put your CV and name out there – be original Tweet at companies and people!

What percentage of companies do you reckon use social media as a recruitment tool? 0 5 1. 40 – 60% 2. 60 – 80% 3. 80% + Countdown 10

Applying for Jobs! This is what a degree is essentially building up to. What percentage of companies do you reckon use social media as a recruitment tool? 40-60% 60-80% 80%+

Applying for Jobs! Think about what you put online Interview example using twitter I have used Facebook and Twitter to search for appropriate people to interview – make sure you only put stuff online you want people to see! Use social media get your name across as many platforms as possible – but do it right!

Quick Tips Search for jobs on twitter – very few people do this! There are loads! If you want to complain – don’t email/phone use twitter It’s public so they have to respond – if they don’t then it looks bad on them Example - SKY

A phrase to remember… What happens in Vegas stays on….. Facebook Twitter You Tube Instagram And the rest!
