1 Welcome to Introduction of Psychology
It’s a GREAT DAY to Learn!!!!

2 What is Psychology? Pick a partner not at your table
Tell them what psychology is

3 Psychology The scientific study of behavior and mental processes.
Uses scientific research methods. Behavior includes all observable behavior. Mental processes include thoughts, feelings and dreams.

4 What does that mean? Psychology is a SCIENCE – we rely on scientific methods in order to answer questions like… What motivates people to choose the paths they do? Why do some people succeed and other fail?

5 Behavior This is a very broad range of interesting topics
Behaviors are things we can observe – like standing up, laughing, dancing

6 These are our thoughts, feelings, and dreams
Mental Processes These are our thoughts, feelings, and dreams

8 Psychological Perspectives
Method of classifying a collection of ideas Also called “schools of thought” Also called “psychological approaches” To view behavior from a particular perspective

9 Cognitive Perspective
Focus: On how people think and process information Behavior is explained by how a person interprets the situation

10 Biological Perspective
Focus: How our biological structures and substances underlie a given behavior, thought, or emotion Behavior is explained by brain chemistry, genetics, glands, etc.

11 Social-Cultural Perspective
Focus: How thinking and behavior change depending on the setting or situation Behavior is explained by the influence of other people present

12 Behavioral Perspective
Focus: How we learn through rewards, punishments, and observation Behavior is explained by previous learning

13 Humanistic Perspective
Focus: How healthy people strive to reach their full potential Behavior is explained as being motivated by satisfying needs (safety, hunger, thirst, etc.), with the goal of reaching one’s full potential once basic needs are met.

14 Psychoanalytic Perspective
Focus: How behavior is affected by unconscious drives and conflicts Behavior is explained through unconscious motivation and unresolved inner conflicts from one’s childhood.

18 Your mission You have 5 minutes to come up with a scenario to teach the class about your perspective. Groups will have to present this to the class… make sure you have fun
