8 Southern Colonies Fertile soil and good climate attracted people to the Southern Colonies. Georgia was founded by James Oglethorpe. He wanted to make a place for debtors to get a new start. Planters in the Carolinas came from Barbados. They brought hundreds of slaves with them to help in their rice fields. Maryland was founded by a devout Catholic named George Calvert, or also known as Lord Baltimore.

9 New England colonies Roger Williams was forced to leave Massachusetts because he criticized the Puritan religious leaders for being government leaders. He then left the colony and formed Rhode Island. The colonists in Windsor, Wethersfield, and Hartford (Connecticut Colony) wrote the first constitution in the colonies. This document was called the Fundamental Orders. Roger Williams of Rhode Island and William Penn of Pennsylvania both treated Indians with respect. This was different from all other colonial leaders. King Philip (Metacom) lead the Algonquian Indians to war against New England because the colonists kept taking their land.

10 Middle Colonies The middle colonies were the most diverse of all colonies. William Penn and the Quakers started the colony of Pennsylvania. They believed in the goodness of every person. The Middle Colonies had both farms and businesses. Farmers raised thousands of acres of wheat, so they became known as the “Bread Basket.”

12 Ch. 5 Les. 2 Test Notes Since the King could not afford to pay troops to protect the colonists from the Indians, he drew the Proclamation Line. The Proclamation Line was an area next to the Appalachian Mountains that the colonist could not go across. It reserved the land on the other side for the Indians. The colonists ignored this line and settled the area anyways.
