2 Mental Disorders A mental disorder is an illness of the mind that can affect the thoughts, feelings, and behaviors of a person, preventing them from leading a happy, healthful, and productive life. Anxiety Mood Disorder Eating Disorders Conduct Disorder Schizophrenia Personal Disorder MAKE A FOLDABLE!!

3 Anxiety A condition in which real or imagined fears are difficult to control Includes: Phobia—a strong, irrational fear of something specific OCD—people who have this get trapped in a pattern of repeated thoughts/behaviors Panic Disorder—having sudden, unexplained feelings of terror

4 Mood Disorders An illness, often with an organic cause, that involves mood extremes that interfere with everyday living Clinical Depression —depression that does not go away resulting from a chemical imbalance that requires medication and therapy Bipolar Disorder —Also known by the name “manic-depressive” disorder. Involves extreme mood changes with manic highs and depressive lows.

5 Eating Disorders People with eating disorders, such as anorexia or bulimia, suffer from life-threatening disturbances in eating behaviors that are real, treatable, medical illnesses

6 Conduct Disorders Includes a pattern of behavior in which the rights of others or basic social rules are violated Theft, truancy, lying, aggression, arson, violence, vandalism

7 Schizophrenia A severe mental disorder in which a person loses contact with reality Delusions, hallucinations, thought disorders May be a combination of genetics and/or chemical and structural changes in the brain.

8 Personality Disorders
People with this disorder think and behave in ways that make it difficult to get along with others Anti-social personality —irritable, aggressive, impulsive, violent Borderline personality —often experience a series of troubled relationships, engage in high risk activities, have poor self- esteem Passive-aggressive —often uncooperative and resent being told what to do, yet ironically they rely on other people’s direction. They show their anger indirectly (for example instead of telling someone that they do not want to go to an activity, they show up late or leave early)

9 Therapy Methods Psychotherapy —ongoing dialogue between a patient and a mental health professional Behavior —focuses on changing unwanted behaviors Cognitive —designed to identify and correct distorted thinking patterns Group —a group of people with similar problems meeting regularly with a trained counselor Biomedical —the use of certain medications to treat or reduce the symptoms of a mental disorder

10 Grief and Death… some terms to know
Coping—dealing successfully with difficult changes in your life Grief Response—an individual’s total response to a major loss Mourning—the act of showing sorrow or grief Grief Counseling—counseling that specializes in grief

Bargaining Depression Remorse Acceptance Hope

12 Coping with Disasters and Crises
Spend time with other people…talk Get back to daily routines Eat nutritiously, get sleep and exercise Do something positive to help your community through the event.
