By the 1500s increased demand for land left many tenant farmers homeless in Great Britain Merchants formed joint-stock companies to set up colonies In 1607 the Virginia Company founded the settlement of Jamestown Largest settlement in colony of Virginia The settlement was almost abandoned, until settlers began growing tobacco In 1618 the colonists formed a lawmaking body called the House of Burgesses

5 Religion Reform of the Catholic Church led to the Protestant Reformation in Europe Some Anglicans, called Puritans, eventually left England for America Since most of the colonists in Maryland were Protestants, the assembly passed the Toleration Act Ensured religious freedom for all Christians

6 Religious Freedom? Pilgrims and Puritans came to America for religious freedom, but were intolerant of other religions The Mayflower sailed to America in 1620, settling in Cape Cod Named their settlement Plymouth Plague killed most of the settlers Survivors saved by Squanto, a Wampanoag Taught them to grow corn and fish

7 Religious Freedom? Economic and religious hardships increased in England John Winthrop and other stockholders of the Massachusetts Bay Company decided to found a colony in New England in1630 Named Massachusetts Refuge for Puritans Model of Christian Charity

Roger Williams and Ann Hutchinson founded the colony of Rhode Island Religious freedom key part of colony charter Rev. Thomas Hooker founded Connecticut Created constitution allowing men to vote

10 For King and Country Following civil war, Charles II became king
Charles took over Dutch colony of New Netherland Gave it to his brother, who renamed it New York Later, some of this land was renamed New Jersey To repay debts, Charles gave land to William Penn Founded colony of Pennsylvania Later bought land for colony of Delaware Penn was a member of the Society of Friends (Quakers) Believed in religious toleration Pacifism To help the poor of England, James Oglethorpe founded Georgia Colony for the poor to start over
