By the 1500s increased demand for land left many tenant farmers homeless in Great Britain
Merchants formed joint-stock companies to set up colonies
In 1607 the Virginia Company founded the settlement of Jamestown

The settlement was almost abandoned, until settlers began growing tobacco
In 1618 the colonists formed a lawmaking body called the House of Burgesses

5. Religion
Reform of the Catholic Church led to the Protestant Reformation in Europe
Some Anglicans, called Puritans, eventually left England for America
Since most of the colonists in Maryland were Protestants, the assembly passed the Toleration Act
Ensured religious freedom for all Christians

Pilgrims and Puritans came to America for religious freedom, but were intolerant of other religions
The Mayflower sailed to America in 1620, settling in Cape Cod
