2 Key Terms Charter: document given to allow the holder to organize settlements in an area. Joint-stock Company: a company in which investors buy stock in the company in return for a share of future profits. Burgesses: representatives to the colonial government in Jamestown.

3 Key Terms 4. persecute: to treat someone harshly because of that person’s beliefs or practices. 5. Puritan: Protestants who wanted to reform the Anglican Church. 6. Patroon: rich landowners in the Dutch colonies. 7. proprietary colony: the king gave colonies that were run by individual groups.

4 Key Terms 8. indentured servant: a laborer who agreed to work without pay in exchange for passage to America. 9. constitution: a document that set up a plan for government. 10. Separatist: Protestants that wanted to leave the Anglican church to start their own church.

5 Key People John White: led colonists to Roanoke. When he returned from England, found the colony deserted. John Smith: saved Jamestown from disaster; was saved by Pocahontas. John Rolfe: learned to grow a form of tobacco that made Jamestown profit; married Pocahontas.

6 Key People 4. Squanto: Wampanoag Native American that taught Pilgrims how to plant, hunt and fish. 5. John Winthrop: first governor of Massachusetts Bay Colony. 6. Thomas Hooker: led settlers to Connecticut. 7. Roger Williams: Puritan minister who founded Rhode Island because he believed that church and state should be separate.

7 Key People 8. Anne Hutchinson: Puritan woman who questioned minister’s sermons. 9. Lord Baltimore: founder of Maryland, a safe home for Catholics. 10. William Penn: a Quaker who founded Pennsylvania.
