2  Physical development – includes large and small motor skill development  Intellectual development – abilities to use language and to understand concepts.  Emotional development – they develop tremendously in the first few years.  Social development – grow and develop quickly to be able to interact with others.  Moral development – with guidance, they learn to tell right from wrong and act accordingly.

3  Large motor skills- skills that involve the legs and arms.  Rolling over  Crawling  Walking  Running  Skipping  Climbing  Dancing  Small motor skills – skills that involve the hands and fingers.  Holding  Pointing  Grasping  Reaching  Writing

4  Infancy – birth to one year  Toddlerhood – one to three years  Preschool age – three to five years  School age – five to ten years

5  Development is sequential.  Rates of development are individual.  The five areas of development are interrelated.

6  During the first few years of life, the brain develops more rapidly than any other time. When very young children are shown love, talked to, and given many experiences, they develop more brain connections.

7 List developmental achievements for each of the following stages: Infancy Toddlerhood Preschoolers School-age Children
