Intellectual Development The development of mental ability to understand and reason. In the first few months babies learn: Cause and Effect Piaget’s theory

Emotional Development The development of feelings (such as joy, sorrow, fear, hate) Emotional development depends on other factors other than child’s individuality. The care it receives, atmosphere of home are very important factors

Social Development The development related to friendly companionship, living with others in a community. Social development is closely related to physical and emotional development. A newborn will respond to people that encourages them to take care of their physical and emotional care. As a baby develops physically he/she becomes more capable of interaction with others. Follows a predictable pattern. Each child is different and will be at these levels at different times. (attachment, failure to thrive, stranger anxiety, personality consistency)

Physical Development The development of the body and its ability to function. Large motor: abilities that depend on the use and control of large muscles of the back, legs, shoulders and arms Small motor (fine): abilities that depend on the use and control of the finer muscles of the wrists, fingers, and ankles.

Patterns of Development

Development is similar for everyone Children all over the world go through the same stages of development in about the same order Example: Babies lift their head before they roll over; stand before they walk

Development builds on earlier learning The skills a child learns @ age 2 builds directly on what he learned @ age 1. Development follows an orderly step by step pattern Walks before running Speaks with simple words before speaking in sentences.

Development proceeds at an individual rate Styles and rate of growth differ from one child to another Ex some walk by 10 months others at 24 months

Development Is interrelated All areas of development continually interact Walk: back and leg muscles must develop to support. Emotionally 1 st steps are a risk; explore

Development is Continuous though out life; It does not stop at a certain age. Sometimes slow; sometimes fast. We continue to develop in may ways throughout our lives »Independence –Learning to feed and dress (younger) –Choosing friends making decisions (teen) –Career choices living on own (young adult)
