4 Stages of Development INFANT – Birth to one year TODDLER – One to three years PRESCHOOLER – Three to five years SCHOOL-AGE – Five to ten years

5 INFANT DEVELOPMENT Learn about the world through their senses – put things into their mouths Three month old babies able to roll over and grasp a rattle Six month old babies able to sit up on their own

6 INFANT DEVELOPMENT, continued Six – twelve month old babies enjoy playing “pat – a- cake” and “peek – a – boo” They love to drop toys and watch you pick them up Very short attention span

7 INFANT DEVELOPMENT, continued Talking to baby helps develop language skills, need stimulation to learn Toy suggestions – mobiles, rattles, squeak toys, soft animals, plastic measuring cups, small balls

8 TODDLER DEVELOPMENT Around twelve months begin to walk Allow lots of room for running Alternate active play with quiet play Talk to toddlers using describing words

9 TODDLER DEVELOPMENT, continued Begins toilet training around 18 – 36 months Capable of opening doors, not aware of possible dangers Can undress self

10 TODDLER DEVELOPMENT, continued Engages in parallel play (play next to each other, but not together) Toy suggestions – push –pulls toys, books with rhymes and pictures to identify, stacking toys, simple riding toys (can’t pedal) small wagons, easy puzzles

11 DEVELOPMENT OF PRESCHOOLERS Proud of their abilities, will hear “watch me!” Engages in cooperative play, begins to play well with other children, encourage this Can ride a tricycle with ease Climbs jungle gym

12 Preschoolers Development, continued Able to throw and catch balls Enjoy crafts – finger paints, crayons, clay Can learn to use a blunt scissors Love to explore

13 PRESCHOOLER DEVELOPMENT, continued Will ask lots of questions Enjoy role –play and dress up Able to use knife and fork by age five

14 DEVELOPMENT OF SCHOOL – AGE CHILDREN Better at playing on their own Enjoy organized games and sports
