2 Section 1Mental Disorders  What are Mental Disorders?  A mental disorder is al illness that affects the mind and reduces a person’s ability to function, to adjust to change, or to get along with others.

3 Section 1 Mental Disorders  Recognizing Mental Disorders  If behaviors, feelings or thoughts are highly unusual and not appropriate to a situation, they are considered abnormal.  Example- Hand washing Normal vs. OCD

4 Section 1 Mental Disorders  Causes (summarized in your notes on Monday?)  Physical Factors  Heredity  Early Experiences  Recent Experiences

5 Section 1- Mental Disorders  Anxiety Disorders  Have you ever been fearful without knowing why?  Anxiety is fear caused by a source you cannot identify or a source that doesn't pose as much a threat as you think.

6 Section 1- Mental Disorders  Anxiety Disorders  Everyone experiences anxiety now and then.  When the anxiety persists for a long time and interferes with daily living, this is a sign of an anxiety disorder. Generalized Anxiety Disorder PhobiasPanic Attacks Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder Post-traumatic Stress Disorder

7 Section 1 Mental Disorders  Generalized Anxiety Disorder  Intense worry, fears or anxiety most days for at least six months  These thoughts & emotions do not have a single specific source.

8 Section 1 Mental Disorders  Phobias  Phobia means “fear of”  Anxiety that is related to a specific situation or object.  Overwhelming and unreasonable fear that poses little danger but provokes anxiety and avoidance.

9 Section 1 Mental Disorders  Phobias  Agoraphobia- fear of open spaces  Claustrophobia- fear of being closed in  Acrophobia- fear of heights  Astraphobia- fear of thunder & lightening  Pteromerhanophobia- fear of flying

10 Section 1 Mental Disorders  Panic Attacks- Numerous symptoms:  Fast heart rate  Choking sensation  Rapid heartbeat  Chest discomfort or pain  Fear of suffocation  Nausea or stomach distress  Belief you may be dying  Dizziness or lightheadness  Fear of losing control Change in behavior to avoid having another attack.

11 Section 1 Mental Disorders  Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder  Unwanted thought or image takes control of the mind is an obsession. An obsession may lead to a compulsion, an unreasonable need to behave in a certain way to prevent a feared outcome.  Routine becomes overwhelming- Example locking doors

12 Section 1 Mental Disorders Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder  People who survive a life threatening event may develop PTSD.  Symptoms: -flashbacks -nightmares -anxiety in similar situations -survivor guilt

13 Section 1 Mental Disorders Mood Disorders  People who have a mood disorder experinece extreme emotions that make it difficult to function well in their daily life. Bipolar Disorders (Manic-depressive Disorder) Depression

14 Section 1 Mental Disorders Schizophrenia  Can be identified by severe disturbances in thinking, mood, awareness, and behavior.  Often a disconnect from reality.  Display extremes in behavior- from calm to paranoid / emotional displays.

15 Section 1 Mental Disorders Impulse-control Disorder  Cannot resist the impulse or drive to act in a way that is harmful to themselves or others.  Uncontrollable urges  Examples: Gambling  Kleptomania

16 Section 1 Mental Disorders Personality Disorders  Display rigid patterns of behavior that make it difficult for them to get along with others.  3 types (summarized in text pg. 88)  Paranoid Personality Disorder  Antisocial Personality Disorder  Dependent Personality Disorder
