THIS UNIT DETAILS THE RISE OF FASCISM & COMMUNISM AROUND THE WORLD. CHAPTER 27 SECTION 1 : THE GATHERING STORM.

STALIN Josef Stalin had taken over as the communist dictator of Russia (now the Soviet Union). Criticism of him or the government was severely crushed. It’s estimated as many as 50 million died from his rule. He will shock the world and form a Non-agression pact with Hitler.

FASCIST ITALY Benito Mussolini- the father of Fascism. Fascism- Rooted in militarism, extreme nationalism as well as thought control and blind loyalty to the government. Hitler used Italy as a blueprint for Germany. 1930, Italy declares war on Ethiopia, move into Africa. The League of Nations fails to help.

NAZI GERMANY Adolf Hitler and the National Socialist German Workers party (NAZIs) win a series of elections in the early 30’s to take control of the Government. Germany after WW1 was in a state of Hyper-Depression. German’s were still angry about the terms of the Versailles treaty. Hitler will use the anger and the economy to press his radical agenda.

HITLER BECOMES CHANCELLOR Hitler blamed Germany’s loss in WW1 on the Jewish people in Germany. 1933 he was elected Chancellor and began to consolidate power. He staged many spectacles and speeches' in order to fire up the German people. Rally video – 3mins.

ATTACKS ON THE JEWS Hitler and the Nazi’s begin to attack the Jewish population of Germany. Limit Rights of Jewish Germans. Eventually send them to Concentration Camps.

THE NAZI WAR MACHINE/ APPEASEMENT Germany begins to build up it’s military in violations of the treaty. Repeated violations of the Versailles treaty, with NO response from the league of nations. Move troops into the Rhineland…no response other than weak protests.

IMPERIAL JAPAN Like Germany, Japans economy suffered during the depression. The Military took over for the democratic government. Soon the radical military government was running Japan. Japanese militarist aggression against Manchuria, China. 5 min video- invasion of Manchuria

AMERICAN ISOLATIONISM A depression weary America was just starting to get back on it’s feet. Wanted nothing to do with Europe or Asia’s problems. The US began to try and improve Latin American relations. Looking at this map, turn to a neighbor and discuss what things you can infer about the great depression.

HITLER VS. STALIN: THE RISE OF EVIL Despite their Hatred of Each other, Stalin and Hitler will agree to a non-aggression pact. Both dictators lives were VERY similar as we will detail tomorrow.
